It doesn't matter how big Touhou is in Japan, not many of us live in Japan.
Most of the views of those videos are from the West. As Japan mostly uses NicoNicoDouga for its Touhou fix.

I would if I could find them. You know, I haven't found too many people mention other sites around here. Even when I've stated I would like to have selection. In fact, I've never seen too much recommendation on the internet at all. All anyone every says is "why would you want to go anywhere else?".

I did hear about NeoGAF a while back on an article here. I tried signing up, but I don't think they're ever going to approve me. I do admit I like most topics there better, and wish I had the ability to post.
I never said that last quote, that was Daystar. Give credit to ye that posted.

I looked "Touhou" up on YouTube, and the largest appeared to be one million. A far cry from "millions and millions".

I have never heard of this series. I know NOBODY who has heard about this but you. Stop insulting those that are ignorant about a niche Japanese game with no English translation.

How have you not heard of this? It's easily better known than Doom, Half-Life, or Halo. This forum is filled with awful, abnormal philistines who probably think Akira Kurasawa is a type of high-powered motorcycle. I have no have respect whatsoever for this site, which I have posted on over two thousand times. Ya'll can go to hell and die, twice! In all seriousness, though, if Touhou was as big as MLP, we'd all know about it. The fact that most of us, on a board focused on video and computer games, don't know about it is a fairly clear indication that it isn't actually well known. It doesn't matter how well known it is, though, as long as it brings you enjoyment. That's the most important thing, I feel. If you're enjoying it, who cares what others think?

Seriously though, Touhou is a pretty big internet meme on the level of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Perhaps I have an internet-y idea of what is famous, and tend to assume most folks on the internet are up on internet trends. Kind of like how Burzum feels mainstream, even though Black Metal itself is underground.
In terms of being well known, Touhou is to MLP as Abruptum is to Darkthrone. I can't believe I just compared MLP to Darkthone, but there you go.

I was about to report you, but then i noticed you were doing that thing that people do, and it was a funny.

Lillith, we get it, you hate people because you can't buy japanese games, and it is our fault for not wanting them enough to get localized. but even if i know what touhou is doesn't mean i care about it in any fashion.

Never heard of Gensokyo. But "Touhou" is at least a combination of letters that I recognise.

If it really is such a big thing, then I've probably seen stuff from this series around the internet loads of times. But all anime girls look the same to me (and I'm not a big RPG fan), so I couldn't tell you for sure. *shrug*

Minecraft video is quite impressive though.

Lilithslave sure knows how to rub people up the wrong way.

"oh? You haven't heard of the world of an old, obscure, Japan only game from a near dead genre? I have no respect for you"

You need to take a step back. Not everyone has to like and know what you like and know.
Hipster Weeaboo, its like a normal Hipster, but the undergroundness is multiplied. Thing is, I play Visual Novels but I literally didnt 'know' any other words for a western website focusing on japaneese stuff full of people who knows and loves japaneese stuff, and marks all western gaming as 300kg men smashing aliens with their bare fists.

Genso-what now?

Well... uh... it's very pretty I guess. Although in my eyes it doesn't hold a candle to the WoW one though in terms of scale, detail or general prettiness.

Anyway, while I'm here...

Lilith, you seem to take it rather personally when people don't know about or discuss the games you like. Quite frankly, it makes you come across as arrogant, petty and more than a little obnoxious.

It would be like me getting annoyed at you because I've never seen you talk about, say, Mirror's Edge.

Huh. Learn somethin' every day. I'd read the word "Touhou" mentioned in passing before, but never bothered looking it up. A series of bullet hell shooters and 2-D fighting games that are often fan-developed, is it? Neat.

Some JRPG thing we're supposed to recognise, apparently.
Y'all gotta be trolling if you're claiming you don't know what one of the biggest video game memes and subcultures ever is. You know, the one that makes the My Little Pony fandom look small and inactive by comparison.

You making a joke that it is some jRPG definitely pushes it over the top and is hard to believe y'all are being serious. Well played y'all, well played.

Hey y'all, what's an Elder Scrolls? I have no idea what an Elder Scrolls is.
Touhou isn't really that popular outside of it's fanbase, and even in it's fanbase only a small part will recognize the word Gensokyo. Since much of the lore of Touhou is estabished in doujins and fan-spinoffs that narrows it down further.

I doubt it's fandom is bigger than MLP, though they might overlap to some extent.

Maybe you should try explaining what you are talking about to those that don't know it instead of insulting them for not knowing it yet?

It's kinda funny, it is. People who don't know about Touhou will say it's "oh some weaboo bullet hell shooter which went out of style ten years ago", completely ignorant of the big ass community and a shitload of fanworks which lie beneath the surface.
It only changes once you actually start peeling that onion and you'll notice it has infinite layers.
Hundreds upon thousands of different fanworks ranging from Youtube videos, songs, books, comics and games, to name a few. It's all right there in front of you and you just don't see it until it's too late and you're sucked up in the endless vortex of content. (Yes, I play Hisoutensoku, and yes, I'm bitter because it cost me my soul)
It's the thing that still keeps Touhou alive and popular.

Is it bad that unfortunate Rule 34 google searches are also what brought Touhou into my periphery vision?

To me it's more surprising that this thread quickly became a thread about Touhou's notability than about what the OP intended. I figured the non-Touhou fans would just ignore it.

It's incredibly popular, there is no doubt about that. But whether it's popular enough to garner the attention of audiences unfamiliar with the doujin scene is up to debate it seems.

On topic: thank you for bringing this to my attention Lilith Slave. From what I saw, I liked the detail. But it brings to mind a question: can you make a separate moon in minecraft? (for the Lunarians and such)

Also were you intending your post to be very polarizing? (not that there's anything wrong with that)

Not to be hipster, but I knew of the project a year ago[hipster glasses]
Also, why are you surprised that not everyone knows about Touhou, op? It has amazing presence on the internet but only for people who know how to find it. Of course, there are going to be people who do not know of and probably blindly disregard it.
I mean, There are those who are quick to use the word "Weeabo" for anything remotely Japanese.

And even with the Bazillions and zillions of Music remixes spanning EVERY genre under the sun, fan games, fan videos, art, conventions and all around a fan base that makes the Brony fandom look like sloths, there will be those who will be wary of a "Japanese game about little girls fighting each other with millions of fans".

I don't think that though. I think Touhou is awesome.

Back on topic for the sake of the poor Op: Like I said, I've seen this a long time ago already but it's nice to be reminded of it again. back then it was still unfinished and put on hiatus. I hope they'll be able to get back to work on it(Hopefully before the next game or official work where there'll be a whole new area to build along with an increased cast roster of at least 6)

I know very little about Touhou except what I've picked up from TvTropes, and this...

(There are english subtitled versions as well, but I thought I'd link the one with finnish subtitles for extra wtf... well, unless you are finnish I guess.}

this "Touhou fanbase" sounds less like a subculture fanbase and more like a cult.....

i have never heard of touhou before in my life and i had no idea what it was until someone linked an article. Now if the OP mentioned "bullet hell" game then i might have had an inkling as ive seen ONE video of bullet hell gameplay footage from a strange tangent forum post on wow. i doubt any of my video game friends have heard of touhou. If there are millions of fans, then there are maybe a handful in the states.

there is nothing wrong with liking a niche genre, i think most of us here are guilty of this in some way or another. I, for example, like Disgaea games and games published by a small company named paradox (mount and blade, majesty, magicka). however i would consider it normal if nobody has heard of them.

Then you've just lost your right to ever play video games again.

I'll be taking your license to play video games now. Ignorance of the law is no excuse.

:p
I'm really sorry, but I have absolutely no idea what your talking about. The Minecraft map looks super cool and incredibly epic, but I have no idea what it is based off of. I'll go search it up when I have the chance.

Nope, genuinely no idea what it is. In fact you mentioning it is the first I've ever heard of it.
If this is true, and I still assert that I'm being trolled. Well... I didn't realize it were possible for my opinion of the Escapist to go any lower.

If you want to look up what it is, all the information is in this thread. Therefor I don't need to tell you anything more. It is arguable the most famous shooting game in the world. Or certainly one of them. And I am one of several million hardcore fans that have been following it religiously for probably around a decade or close to it.
Never heard of it either before this thread. My introduction though has been this: All the fans of it that I know of are the extremely obnoxious type who feel compelled to assert their superiority over those who haven't.

As a result, I really don't have any desire to learn any more about it.

Yeah, not watching 45 minutes of Minecraft when I can watch some guys take the piss out of FF 13-2.
I skimmed through it though. Eh. Nothing really impresses me in Minecraft any more.

I did try out Touhou once. Though it was a fighting game, not a shooter. It was all in Japanese and didn't seem very good.
