As soon as I jump into any game on my PS3, the mute buttons are hit. It gets me killed, it interrupts game flow, but honestly, I just detest having other people talk to or about me. I get funk for being British on Xbox Live, I get funk for killing people on every game ever, and I get funk for sniping on every game ever. I get it a lot less on PC, in fact, it's quite pleasant, most of the time, but consoles are the breeding ground for racist fucks.

If it was up to me I'd have tracked down and destroyed the majority of XBL users, that's for certain. Though currently I have taken the strategically sound tactic of not playing any multiplayer, which has worked wonders.

Though I have the kind of accent most Americans will either tell to go eat crumpets and drink tea (I am not helped by the fact that I do very much enjoy tea and crumpets), or I shall get the conversely rather nice: "Hehe, your accent is funny; say more words!"

OT: People with accents = win in my book. But I kinda disagree with the whole "deserved to get slagged when you do something stupid". If someone does something stupid as in killing themselves, accidentally or because they think that will be fun, then that is just awesome-sauce, no need to say anything mean to 'em. If someone does a mistake, there's also no need to be mean (constructive criticism is ok if the player is new to the game), just give 'em a chance...

1: The Irish give just about the same amount of crap as they take.
2: Despite The validity of your rebuttal (though i couldn't understand the last sentence, the IRA and black and tans now give any retarded Irishman and their younger brother an excuse to be racist online (my school's population is a perfect case study).

It's the fact that it gets into your head. Accents are the easiest way to single someone out because you can't tell someone's skin color by their voice (mostly) and unless you hear them say the n-word you don't know anything about them. Americans (and I am American) are the biggest assholes BECAUSE we're American. We have our Red, White and Blue flag power pumped so fully into our veins that we think we're the shit, and everyone NOT so is shit.

That's the stereotype, not ALL of us, just most of the country. But the insults come not because of the general reason most of the time, but being made fun of gets into your head and obscures your judgment, making you more likely to slip up and do worse while the insulter gets the satisfaction of knowing they're messing with you and take advantage of your slip-ups.

Country doesn't matter to me personally, I'm proud of the fact that I'm from American and especially proud of my home city, Cleveland, Ohio. I feel it defines me as myself. That's why joking about a persons home can mess with them, their pride gets hit. Like in Knocked Up, when they make fun of the guy with the beard over and over again just for having it, it messed with his mind so he eventually caves in. That's the point of slag or insults or whatever, to hurt a person's pride to the point that they lose focus and cave in like a fat man walking in San Francisco, California. (making another American reference, you crazy oversea people wouldn't get it)

The few people on Live I've encountered at a friend of mine's house have been complete 'tards. I'm sure there's some decent people out there, but, meh. I have a strange drony kind of accent (a cross between Irish and English with a distinct American twang) so I probably would sound fairly normal over your average headset.
