Oh, I'm happy. I just got accused of hacking in a 1v1 in StarCraft 2. It just made my day. Big ol' banana grin.

It was 1v1 against a platinum Terran. I rolled my usual Protoss. Didn't do anything cheesy. Just a standard 2 gate-robo- to expand. Didn't even rush at all. So after a couple minutes, the Terran pushes out with 2 tanks, 3 medivacs, and about a bunch marines/marauders. By then i had several immortals and bunch of gateways units. I was fine. My observer was traveling with his army, so i knew exactly where he was and when to strike. My sentries split his army in half with FF, the immortals absorbed damage from the tanks and marauders, while my zealots and stalkers killed everything. It wasn't even close. He lost 40 food and i lost about 20.

Now, for those who don't play starcraft, the above is a very typical Protoss vs Terran battle. Even if he had attempted to micro his units, he was stuck between a force field and my units. Nothing he could do.

But here's the best part. He starts whining. "Impossible!", I reply with "Not really". Then he goes on about how all his units could attack and that he had tanks and medivacs. AND MARAUDERS!!! Like that special combination was unbeatable... Then he accused me of some kind of hack. Not sure what kind he was talking about, but apparently i was using the mystical hack that makes terran opponents do stupid things.

After getting called a hacker, i knew that i had the game in the bag. So instead of trying to finish the game, i just took a 3rd base, and prevented him from expanding. a couple minutes later, he's out of minerals. So he loads everything into dropships and heads to my base. He tried to drop everything in a tiny open space between buildings where only a couple marines could fit. I take everything out while they are still in the drop ship. Pretty standard.

Then he accuses me of hacking again. and then rage-quits.

I consider myself to be a manner player. i don't taunt my opponents. I usually say gg. And i don't get personal pleasure from the idea of crushing my opponent. I normally think 'well, perhaps i am getting better'.

But something about being accused of hacking caused a swell of pride. I love that i destroyed him and enraged him enough to find some other explanation for his defeat. It just made me happy. It's not a nice feeling. I try to avoid Schadenfreude.

I don't know why, but getting accused of hacking in an online game made me feel grateful to be playing the game at that moment, against that opponent. Like i finally accomplished something. Then i remember it's just a game.

What about other people. ever get accused of hacking because of your performance? What did you do and what did it feel like?

I once found a sweet combination of sniping spots in TF2 (I like to have more than one to move between every so often to spread revenge attempts) in which I had the tiniest of spaces to see through and take shots from. Got a few 'omgwallhax' whiners after the first few kills, which made me feel pretty good about myself. If someone think s the only way you could possibly beat them is by cheating, you're doing the game a favour by deflating their ego a little.

Mostly, it just ticks me off. Accusing me of cheating simply shows that you have lack the skill to beat me and are in denial. That's just no fun for me.

Ehh I have to say though most people get confused between lag/the game screwing up/and actual hackers because games do like bugging out and lag can make people suck up damage like none other.

A few years back I was heavy into Counter-Strike. It got to the point that if I went 'pubbing' (that is to say, playing public servers of drop-in-drop-out gameplay rather than scheduled matches), I stood a high chance of getting called a 'hacker'. Usually by a whiny pre-teen with tourette's. The same ended up happening in Zombie Panic: Source, after I got pretty damn good with the handguns (the 'ditch' weapon no one ever used). It was fun at first, but ultimately it forced me to stop playing. Now I stick mostly to single-player titles, or occasionally The Killing Floor.

He just sounds like a noob sore looser. People like him generally never get anywhere in online gaming.

One of my friends got so good at sniping in counter-strike he frequently was accused of hacking.

It got to the point where he could tell if his opponent was no-scoping or not by hearing the very hard to hear "click" the game makes when you zoom in on a sniper.

Its not really my story but I still think its a good one. sitting next to him while he yells "I got kicked AGAIN?!?" well trying pathetically to even get a 1:1 Ratio while i played was good times for me.

I'm not particularly good at multiplayer games, or single player for that matter.
What I am is persistent, so after a lot of trial-and-error I usually start racking up some wins no matter what I'm playing. Not constantly, but every now and then. It seems that's what the majority of online players expect to see. If someone is doing considerably better than me, then they must be using hacks.

Because, obviously, everyone is about equal in skill, right? If I were to try playing against someone in the Platinum League, I would get wiped out in about three to four minutes. No question about it. However, I don't mind, because I got lots of skills to improve on and develop. Never did play all that much Starcraft 1 back in the day, so this whole experience is pretty new to me.

Headshotting scouts at close range is a pretty good way to be called a hacker in TF2. If you pull off a shot like that it's just a roll of the dice on whether or not the victim is mature enough to realise it probably wasn't hacking.

Once someone even spectated me and still said I was hacking! I don't think I'm a robot...

I played CS: source for a little while with 3 buddies. one of which was way better then the rest of us. it was mostly fun and we got destroyed most of the time except for the one guy. but it's always fun to get a semi lucky head shot in and immediatly get called a cheater. Seemed to be a pretty common thing in CS

I've had that problem with Counter-Strike when I was playing that quite a few years ago now... Because I spent so much damn time playing it (pre- serious school and work) I had become annoyingly good with the AK-47 (which I believe they still call CV-47), and would always use 2-3 bullets to headshot any oponent I faced, usually unaffected by distance. I had simply peaked in my particular play-style. Those on my team could clearly see I used no aim-bot, but the other team couldn't spectate me so I ended up being kicked from most of my regular servers and finally quit the game. Now I only play with friends, and I'm not allowed to use the AK =3.

I agree. In any game, seems especially common in FPSs, you'll be accused of cheating/hacking constantly. You may have a K/D of 4/12 on a bad day, and they'll still call you a hacker for that one head-shot you got from a long distance...

Happened once when playing Metal Gear Online.
Forget what the game mode was, but for some reason I did really well.
After the match I got an angry message about how I was cheating. They didn't explain in what way I was cheating, but I'm pretty sure I wasn't.

In TF2 a week or so ago i was on a 2fotrt server but then everyone bar 3 of us left. While we waited for new players we had a taunt kill battle which was loads of fun (i was sniper, and there was a medic and heavy) then two people came in and started playing and started trying to kill us before we could change to combat classes to play properly now we had enough players. They both went scout and started abusing us for using bad classes and saying that we were all noobs and that they would destroy us, i killed them both 6 times with the huntsman (and i'm not amazing with it but i can hit a head when i need to, they were just running in a straight line) and then the accusations of hacking came for about 5 minutes straight bfore they got bored and left.

Modern Warfare 2 (I know i know..) Quarry map in the hallway area i was looking at the window and a bloke suddenly jumps out of the window and right in front of me. Apparently walking into the enemies sights directly in front of them makes you a wall hacker...

I do get called a hacker in games like COD4. it's funny because I can tell what is a rock and what is a helmet. combined with a good loadout and reflexes makes me a damn good player.

Many times I kill people before they can ambush me.

Also I shoot camping spots through walls. Wastes ammo sometimes but worth it.

I don't run and gun. I think about where people are going to be and how I can get them. So this slow moving guy shoots through walls and across the map to the guy in the grass. So many people rage but I have half the server backing me up because I don't get everyone 100% of the time.

Considering how many times I've been kicked from Bad Company 2 servers when playing as a medic on Rush maps for "hacking", it's starting to get pretty fucking annoying.
At first I had the same reaction as you, but after the first three or four times, it starts to wear god damn thin.

Seriously, just because I'm good at keeping about 6 different people, gathered in the same space alive when under fire from a Bradley and several people spamming Carl Gustavs(Bastards, I like to call them), does not mean I'm hacking, it just means I'm doing my bloody job.

My shotgun-related antics back in the old days of Halo:CE led to a few accusations being thrown in my direction.

Oh, and there was this one time when a series of bizarre flukes involving plasma grenades resulted in several people screaming at me.

Ah... good times.

Heh, that sounds ultra-familiar. For me, it was my skill with the USP and Glock 18. I used nothing but pistols, saved up cash, and bought the M249 Paratrooper a few rounds in... Man, this is making want to play CS. Anyway, the Para inevitably brought on the calls of "Hacker! He's cash hacking!" or "He's aimbotting!" The best was when new players wouldn't use the walk key, so I'd open up on them just as they rounded a corner! Ah, good memories.

On a separate note, they still do call it the "CV-47" (Chinese Variant Model 1947)... In the older release of Counter-Strike v1.4 (pre-source), the guns were labeled with their correct companies, models, and calibers. Not so much any more. I still cringe when kids call the Steyr Aug the "Bullpup".

I remember on this one TF2 payload map, i forgot the name, i was a defending pyro. I was hiding up on a spot for a sentry overlooking the cap point when a small piece of bad medic cloth went through the wall. I flamed the wall, the flames went through and killed everything on the other side and someone called me a hacker. Good laugh.
