Whatever happened to that guy? Did he finally get banned over Ponies? Leave over Ponies? I remember Ponies really set him off and thus people starting posting military ponies to annoy him.

I don't particularly approve of trolling but when someone gets wound up over such a silly thing it's hard to really say he's a victim.

"Very arcadey" and CoD comparisons kind of make me think that you think its basically a target practice style shooter where enemies will pop out in front of you and you can easily shoot them which it isn't. Learning to manoeuvre and how to actually use weapons effectivly are a big part of it.

When people refer to it as "arcadey" they mean you have plenty of ammo and the controls are pretty simple, not that the gameplay doesn't take skill or time to learn. Just because you fire a missile while locked on it doesn't mean you will hit 100% of the time, it'll miss probably more than it'll hit.

I heard the "Arcadey" term from a couple articles discussing the new game and some discussion how the flight physics weren't super realistic(you won't black out from pulling off some crazy stunts and whatnot) which is why I mentioned it. CoD is the closet thing I could think of to compare it to.

Also all air craft have cannons, even if they would not have one in real life. So feel free to get in close and swiss cheese a plane.

A bit odd you having those two statements back to back- you do realise the F-4 in Vietnam was the plane that demonstrated how bad an idea having no cannons was, right? They had missiles only for a long time, and lost so many potential kills because of that. Nowadays all other jets generally have a cannon, specifically because of what happened with the F-4.

Yeah but do any of them have a cheat that turn all the planes into piston engine fighters that don't use fire and forget missiles?

Because that's what pushes me away. The fact it's all jets.

Have you checked out Warthunder? Its a more realistic air combat multiplayer game, but its also free and most of the air craft are ww2. There are also tanks in it and they just recently added ship combat also.

Yeah I'm digging War Thunder quite a bit- it's pretty good. I'm also thinking about tracking down Sky Crawlers Innocent Aces, made by the same studio as Ace Combat, but set in the Sky Crawlers universe, based around that anime by Mamoru Oshii which turned out to be boring as hell, sadly.

I know of the struggles with the F-4, while most fighter planes since then have had internal cannons a few portrayed in Ace Combat didn't, nor any Air to Air capability at all. They have found various ways to add a cannon to the F-35C when only the A variant has an internal cannon. And in older games when you get to use an F-117 it has sidewinder bays and a gun, making it a Microprose F-117.

He somewhat left during the last months of the wild west. No one really replied to his threads, since most people didn't share his hobbies and interests.

I only played 4 and 5, but they left a great impression on me. They were the perfect level of cinematic fighter jet porn for me without being automated. It's not for anyone wanting a sim, it's for people wanting to be Shin Kazama or Doug Masters.

I just have to decide if I want to start with 7 or hunt down one of the PS2 games(6 was apparently XBOX 360 only and the PS2 ones should be reasonably easy to find). Between 4,5, Zero and 7, what's the recommendation?

Start with 5/0 imo. I believe you do get 5 along with 7 if you get the PS4 version.

There's a few new mechanics which you might miss if you go backwards on the order, along with having to deal with graphics rewinding back decades. Though 7's story is pretty awful so you might end up appreciating 5/0 better in that respect if you go backwards.

I will say AC is as arcadey compared to actual flightsims as CoD is compared to ARMA. It's perfect if you just wanna get into the air and start fighting without having to figure out how to start the bloody thing up just to fire 4 missiles from beyond visual range and return to base to rearm. It's honestly just as arcadey as any typical FPS is compared to a proper milsim.
