My biggest one off the top of my head would be Sonic Adventure 2, specifically Knuckles' late levels where drowning is a very possible consequence. Especially in his portion of the eclipse cannon level.
So, when I was 13 I found out that there was a power up I missed for him. The one lets him stay underwater without worry of drowning. The thing is, I beat the game when I was 10. Yes, I beat Knuckles' portion of the eclipse cannon level without giving a fuck about drowning and even then the few times I did die were due to getting hit with no rings.
and Cynthia in Pokemon Diamond. Apparently, she's regarded as one of the most challenging battles in the franchise. I still blasted away her team and thought "Really, that's it?" after the battle when I was 13.
