I have noticed there're some mixed feelings about Achievements (Trophies: PS3). I wanna know how do you feel?

This shouldn't sway your vote, but I think they're patronising and completely null seeing as they only appear to count towards your "cool" rating... if you know what I mean!

Achievements are great. It give you that extra little thing to shoot for once you're done with the main game.

I mainly think that it's interesting at how Sony decided to emulate the Achievements on the 360, but the amount of people accusing Sony of copying was relatively small compared to the Microsoft hate from other camps (like the Sony fanboys) when the NXE was announced, or the similarities between Vista and Mac OSX.

That being said, I don't mind companies "borrowing" ideas from other companies because it's these processes that perfect ideas like Achievements, or online gameplay mechanics.

EDIT: I do like the Achievements/Trophies.

I know what you mean about cool rating. But i consider them more an extra part of the game, to have fun with along the way. If you try not to think of them as cool rating, and instead thiuk af them as optional extras, the fun is there. At least that worked for me.

The reason the amount of people accusing sony of copying microsoft was fairly small is because the idea of rewarding a gamer wih a useless "point" has been around a lot longer than the 360 has. Ratchet and Clank for example, I didnt know spyro 2 had achievements but apperently it did. I guarantee the group calling foul on Vista was much more than sony fanboys. I wasn't aware of any hatred circling about the NXE, didnt seem like that big of a deal.

i cant stand when they are tied to the games progress i think they should be extra stuf that requires skill to "achieve" i mean completing a mordern game is not really hard (for the most part what with all the interest in the *sigh* casual market)

Its like sony and microsoft are in a war to copy each other and the wii to death. people like achievements, lets add them(trophies). people like miis, lets add them(avatars) Microsoft would kill for blu-ray support. Sony would love to have that netflix partnership.

I hope the next generation sees one standardized console. You don't see competing platforms for home video.(well not for very long anyways)or music.(mp3's are standard)or books.(although there is a cool new e-ink technology) My PS4 should play xbox720 games and vice versa. why not?

Sorry for going off topic. I like achievements/trophies.

No no, I realize that the points system has existed longer than Xbox's Achievements system, but I was more referring to the universal points system (Gamerpoints).

And I may have mispoken, or maybe I spoke too soon, about the Sony fanboys, but I had a specific video in mind that I had found on GameTrailers: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/278937.html

Hooray, another achievement topic. Lessee, this time I will say that achievements are awesome and that every game should have them including the Wii and every PC game and gamerscore is an irrefutable yardstick of one's prowess as a gamer as well as the length of one's special purpose.

Adds a fair bit more gameplay in some games. Also achievements can sway whether some people buy a certain game or not.

I still dont see making them universal as anything that wouldn't have happened without microsofts existance.

There are always going to be guys that make videos like that, but you have to realize it was CBS News that did the bit about vista and mac osx, not that fanboy. However, I just want to point out that there are fanboys for both consoles and how much hate you see for one particular system usually depends on where you are on the internet. for example, the escapist is very ps3 and pc based, so you shouldn't expect to see much bashing of those two things, unless something got really fed up(which with sony, does occasionally happen). I think i may have lost my point but whatever.

ON TOPIC. I like trophies and achievements because they give me something to shoot for and serve as proof that I did something exceptional. However, I'm sick of getting acheivements just for finishing part of the story mode, i didnt really do anything awesome to get it.

When I was in primary school, my teacher had a chart, and when you'd done well, she'd put a gold star next to your name for all to see. I may be approaching thirty now, but the sense of accomplishment when I unlock an achievement reminds me a lot of getting a star next to my name.

I think that achievements are Microsoft's way of acknowledging that people are fairly competitive by nature. The fact that Sony have not only taken the idea on board, but are making trophies compulsory in future games means that they recognise this too. Even Valve have put achievements in their games.

It may seem childish, but it's not confined to games. If you follow sports or watch game shows, it's the same sort of thing. We like to compete and we like to have something to show off when we win.

I don't see the gamer score as sort of a comparison to skill because I have about 6 or 7 games that have 75% completion of achievements or more, while another gamer may have a considerably larger library of games, but most of those games are at 25 to 30% completed, and sit below my gamer score.

I do love the achievement system, but only if the achievements are completely optional and require you to do more than play the extras. Half Life 2 and BioShock are my favorite examples because not only are there the story line achievements, but they also have achievements for going that extra mile during your game to score some gamer score points.

Some games though either need to find a different set of achievements for being ridiculously easy (Avatar and most sports games), or for being insanely impossible (I'm looking at you GHIII).

I don't think there was anything I really disagreed w/ in that statement. But I will say Microsoft did achievements first, and when I say that I mean that it doesn't really matter whether they would've existed as they do now w/ or w/o MS, what matters is that they were the first to implement them. Similar to the avatars/Miis. They probably would've come along at one point or another, but Nintendo did them first and Microsoft followed suit, essentially copying them.

EDIT: I do realize that it was CBS that broadcast that clip, but it was used as fuel for the flame by the fanboy. So I'm not arguing w/ you there, just making my logic clear.

I like the achievement system on the 360. It's a little extra bonus in a game when an achievement pops up. I usually don't try to get all of the achievements, but it does feel good when you work for and then get one of the harder ones.

I quite liked the achievements on Timeshift, for example "Look What I Can Do!" for walking on water. However there are some achievements that just annoy me, like Zombie Genocider on dead rising who can be bothered to kill 53,000+ zombies

But achievements add replay value to a game and I love them for that.

People (non-gamers) who have noticed or asked about Achievements on my 360 tend to assume that Gamerscore is tied to / identical to Microsoft points... the more you play, the more points you get, and the more new stuff you can buy on Live. They were all like "wow, that's pretty cool" until I told them they were wrong, and then they didn't see the point of Achievements at all. I like their version better, actually.

I actually did this :( Took 4 hours of driving through the tunnels like a madman, over and over and over again. I only bothered because you get the Megaman Buster as well as 20 lousy Gamerscore. Of course, I haven't played the game since... so much for that Buster.
