Not at all. Almost all of the achievements I've ever gotten, both on Xbox and the PS3 trophies, were things that just happened in the course of playing a game.
In a couple cases, I'd go a bit out of my way to get a few. With Bully and Lego Batman, I realized that it would be very easy and not that time consuming to get all 1000, so I did a few things I wouldn't have normally bothered with to get them.
I dspise such hollow and meaningless rewards so I pay not attention to them when I play. If I get one while playing uh...yay? I don't go out of my way for them seeing as it's just some stupid carrot on a stick bullshit with the carrot being rather non existent.
I don't really have a problem with them. In a generation of games that have completely eliminated the idea of "scoring points" it does recreate that little bit of "yay I have higher numbers than you" thrill from when I was a kid.
That being said I don't usually actively hunt for them and it really depends on the quality of the game and the type of Achievements offered.
I frequently see them as a sort of "cheat sheet" for things to see and do once the bulk of the game has been completed.
Batman: Arkham Asylum is a perfect example. Once I beat the game I looked over the achievements and went looking for the things I may have missed, but I wasn't going to bother playing through the entire game again just to get them.
World Of Warcraft is another good example. I very rarely go out with the intention of gathering Achievements but if I'm just killing time waiting for a party to form or something I'll fart around and try to get some of them.
The only time I try to get achievements is when I'm playing with friends, because doing it alone seems pointless. Other than that, I just get them randomly, and it makes me feel a little happier... although it's still pointless.
If I love a game, I'll show my love by getting every achievement. Unless that game is Left 4 Dead 2, in which case there's that one goddamned campaign that's too hard to finish on Expert, and that one goddamned achievement that glitches out when I earn it so I don't get what I deserve.
If I enjoy the game, or they look fun, I'll go for them, but even though I LOVE Mass Effect, I'm never going to get the ones where you play 75% of the campaign with each group member... I'm sorry, not happening.
I've never tried to get an achievement in my life, and I don't think I ever will. They're for other people. I don't object to their presence, they're just a part of the game I'm uninterested in.
I like getting achievements, and I will certainly go a little out of my way to get them (like crushing 5 cars in Mafia 2 - it's really not necessary to do this, but it's easy). But I'm still undecided if I want to play through again finding all the Playboy centrefolds for instance (I only found 21 on my first run). Don't get me wrong, I liked Mafia 2, loved it. But do I want to sit there with a map to all the magazines just for 40 points? Then again, I would then have a gallery of 50 naked women I can view at anytime, where else [http://www.google.com] am I going to find that?
I just don't care. If I happen to get one, it might be exciting for a second or two, but then I go back to actually playing the game. Also, I play on PC and Wii, so I don't come across them as much either.
For me it depends on the achievement, if it's something stupid that just requires hours and hours of pointless grinding, then I wont bother, but if it's something that's actually skill based, I'll usually give it a shot. [Example, if the achievement is 'Kill 50,000 rats' , it's not gonna happen. If it's 'Complete X without using Y' (where Y is something that trivializes X) then yea, I'll give it a shot.]
