Action Text

I can't stand it when people use action text. It just seems unnatural for me. When you say what you're doing, and make it out of context, it sounds weird. Why can't you keep it in context? Like instead of typing *gives X a hug*, why can't you just say "X, c'mere so I can give you a hug." I want to hunt down and kill the person who came up with the idea in the first place, so I just say: "I'm gonna hunt down and kill the person who came up with action text." After all, this is a forum; we're supposed to speak to each other instead of speaking actions.

Erm.. I mean: "Kemosabi, c'mere so I can giv'ya a a hug ya big lug! I just agree with ya such a big, huggy bunch!"

I really don't mind it, personally.

Maybe because action text is quicker than writing.....not action text! Like *facepalm* is quicker than, 'I actually just facepalmed at what you said back there'

Sometimes action text is useful. Like when you want to simulate a forceful action you would take against another person who isn't close enough for you to actually do said against.

Besides, it doesn't really hurt anything to have it, so long as this place doesn't become some sort of text-based Internet hangout where that's all that's used. Like a MUD, with no good dungeons.

I kinda figured this would happen. But since we're not taking it seriously, *smashes Quantum Roberts in the face with a brick*

*Silently ponders how someone could get so offended by such a trivial, harmless, small thing*

*Shakes head, sighs, and speaks:*

I don't see how you can get so offended by such a trivial, harmless, small thing.

You see that a lot over online chat programs like MSN or whatever. It does kind of annoy me but not enough for me to care that much, I just tend to ignore. It gets kind of strange when people start licking each other though, or play with each others hair. You wouldn't do that in person, would you?

By the way, that has to be the best avatar on the whole damn site, I can't stop laughing when I see it.

I really don't mind it when I'm playing a game with someone, it's just when I'm having an actual conversation and see someone doing it, it bugs me somehow.

Well, it depends on the situation. If I'm trying to be anything approaching seriousness, I don't use them.
The rest of the time, I can whip it out if I want to show something happening without going into RP detail.

Exactly! What I'm trying to say is that, in a serious topic, action text crosses the line. If a topic is for fun, then I actually encourage them.

Ah. Gotcha!
I can see how they would be annoying when you're trying to be serious, but, as I'm sure you know, some people will never be serious.
In fact, this is probably one of only five serious posts I've made today.
Don't you feel so lucky?

Hah! I try to make the new guys feel welcome :p
That little add-on brings up a tangential thought, though. If you are not thrilled by action text in a serious thread, I can only assume you are not quite pleased when emoticons show up, either.
