How can they level a fine? they can charge for theft and it would probably hold up in a court, but a $5000 fine for half of a $60 game that isn't even finished yet? forgive my ignorance of the american legal system, but I don't believe they'd get away with that in Canada.

A better question - could you pirate TF2 before it went F2P?
It's pretty much impossible to play MP with pirated copies on the PC. Cracks can only do so much.
not really, as there are a lot of workarounds for that
like steam hacks, or alternate releases

hell, some pirated games don't even need that kind of thing for MP, remember Crysis 2? it could be played online without being legit when it was released

How exactly are they "knocking on doors?". Do they have authority to use unproven claims to shut down someone's internet?

Oh well, I stopped playing battlefield after the first one anyway. I hope Kotick loses a bundle for the way companies treat customers these days.

What are the piracy levels for games released exclusively on Steam, GOG, Origin or other online stores? The weak link is always retail.
The problem with online shops such as steam? If steam was to close down, all of your games would be lost whereas if a localgames shop closed down you just wouldn't be able to buy anymore games however I can understand where you're coming from

Er, private companies aren't allowed to fine people only sue them. If a crime has been committed then it's up to the state to prosecute the perps, not activision.

The game has been finished for probably the better part of a month now. Games are finished long before they release.

And I'd be extremely pissed if people were stealing my multi-million dollar seller and putting it on the internet, even if it was only half of it. At least they're asking you to delete it before they sue you.

I don't have a source for this, but I remember hearing in several places before that Valve has said that if for whatever reason Steam were to shut down, that they would unlock the games you've bought so that you can play them without steam.

Do they have any legal right to do that? Even assuming they can get F.A.S.T. involved, the very worst they can do is unlimited fines and ten years in prison... [http://www.fastiis.org/our_services/enforcement/anti_piracy_faq/]

WAITAMINUTE?

What's the maximum charge for manslaughter? 4 - 9 Years, do you say?

Attempted murder? 15 years?

Do we think that we're giving people just a LITTLE too much power here?
..wait what? I honestly didn't believe you at first, then went to the site you linked, and was blown away. That's ridiculous. The worst this could be is theft, which comes nowhere close to actually killing someone.

EDIT: also, what exactly are "unlimited fines?" does that mean they can fine you a billion dollars for one infringement? If so that's..I don't even know.

1. There is no benefit to leaking 1/2 of a game.
2. They literally have no way of knowing who downloads it.
3. I can't seem to find this so called leak on any reputable torrent site, so it sounds like bullshit to me.
4. Why would anyone bother pirating this game, which will surely be a complete piece of junk.

I thought there could be a 5th point... but I was wrong. Either way. No much can be done with this leak. I love how they have blown this out of proportion already. At least wait till people can download and illegally play an actual copy of the game before you go hunting. I hate Activision. Knocking on doors indeed. What do they propose exactly? They can't do anything to anyone without evidence. And, "I think this person may have illegally downloaded my game", probably won't stand in court. Good luck.

They can level a fine because they're pressing the charges. In Canada it's Theft Under $5000 which carries a prison sentence of 2 years max and 6 months minimum, and/or a $2000 fine. So steal a game from Ubisoft Montreal lol.

And if you were to lose the disk, you would be out of luck anyway. I have lost disks before, but I have never seen Steam close shop.

If Steam shuts down, the entire internet is my backup, if you know what I mean... ^_-

(I already purchased the license, so that shouldn't be a problem ethics-wise.)

That's a bit of a myth. Valve never made any claim like that.

1. Join bittorrent swarm

2. ????????

3. IP Address JACKPOT!
And how do they convert those IP addresses to actual people. Haven't the hurt locker makers had to spend a few years trying to get that info from ISP's with court orders etc? That's why I call bull to Activation coming to peoples houses so quickly if they can only get an IP address.

They are only going to be going after people who had direct contact with the person who stole the disk at this stage. Maybe they will get torrent-ers at some stage later.

It does seem a home goal from a PR perspective coming over like the Mafia if the code that has been leaked / stolen is not in anyway playable.
