I don't get it. A singer sang a song, who is this guy and why is it so offensive?

It's sad that more people can't see how disgusting this protrayal of Cobain is (I'm not even a big fan, but the man had the balls to stand up for his creative beliefs and now in postmortem he's been turned into a marionette - the irony is cringe worthy even if you don't like the band).

But what's really disgusting here is that, rather than try and rectify this hero's image with his fans, Activision is of course just going on a clean-up campaign and using copyright as the bucket and mop.

Exactly. That is the problem here, for many of Kurt Cobain's fans, this akin to dragging his corpse out the ground, slapping a smiley face on it and having it perform the chicken dance. Its the evil twin or anti-christ to what Kurt Cobain and his music were all about. And even if you are unwilling to accept that, it still reminds people of his suicide, which I personally really wish he hadn't gone through with.
Bah. If they made a GH game with Jon Nodveidt as a usable avatar, I would play it. His suicide was tragic, but as a fan of Dissection I would be thrilled instead of appalled to be able to use him as an avatar.

I don't understand why Kurt Cobain is any different. So the man made some music that gained him lasting fame and a loyal fanbase. Nodveidt did the same...except fewer people even know of the existance of Dissection, and fewer mourn over his death.

As to videos of Kurt getting banned...I don't see why they bothered putting him in the game in the first place if it was going to be such a "legal hassle".

I remember those cold nights with depression in late high school, holding a knife to my skin and wondering what the fuck was wrong with me as Rape Me played almost ten years ago... Hell, I wish I could say I was Emo because then it would be wankery instead of actual depression. Hell, I still wouldn't have that shit going on in my head... Hell... Wait, nobody here cares.

I get the supposed atrocity of Cobain's death vs this scenario. However, I also see how it doesn't really matter. At all. He didn't die for your sins. He didn't die to make the world a better place. He died because he chose to die. He gave up. Fuck him. I mean that. I mean that with every little bitter mote I can conjure right now. His death has all this magical meaning that is projected on by every little wannabe rebel still shopping at the GAP (Fun Fact: Hot Topic is owned by GAP) and all that projected and forced meaning just cheapens whatever he DID die for.

Johnny Cash is in there as are a number of other cultural icons. Cobain killed himself because he didn't like the commercialization of his band. Well, I don't recall the story about a gun to his head forcing him to sign with a record label. Love had all the power in the world to stop this and she signed it away either because there were pretty colors or she just needed more coke money. Guess what? Grow up. It was done and done legally. Enjoy the irony.

Don't just use this as yet another opportunity to bash Courtney Love, Dave Grohl and Krist Novaselic agree with her.

From Kotaku http://bit.ly/BE7Nj

This is a statement regarding Nirvana, Guitar Hero and the likeness of the late Kurt Cobain.

We want people to know that we are dismayed and very disappointed in the way a facsimile of Kurt is used in the Guitar Hero game. The name and likeness of Kurt Cobain are the sole property of his estate - we have no control whatsoever in that area.

While we were aware of Kurt's image being used with two Nirvana songs, we didn't know players have the ability to unlock the character. This feature allows the character to be used with any kind of song the player wants. We urge Activision to do the right thing in "re-locking" Kurt's character so that this won't continue in the future.

It's hard to watch an image of Kurt pantomiming other artists' music alongside cartoon characters. Kurt Cobain wrote songs that hold a lot of meaning to people all over the world. We feel he deserves better.

Guitar Hero 5 [http://www.activision.com] from YouTube, claiming they violate copyright.
Whilst I can understand why they would pull Kurt Cobain due to the controversy behind this (as mentioned in previous news articles including the one in listed in the OP), I don't think calling copyright infringement would've been the best way of going about it. There are loads of videos of Guitar Hero songs on Youtube, yet they seem to have decided to target only the ones featuring Kurt Cobain covering other people's songs in this case, and not even all of them at that.

I don't really think it's about them pulling it because it has Cobain in it, but the fact that all these companies pull videos with their work in them off YouTube in the first place. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, just type "WMG" into the YT searchbar. I've had my videos pulled by many companies, even a video pulled by IGN that didn't have anything from their site in the first place. But if the case is Cobain himself, then.. eh, whaddya gonna do?

It would be nice if these articles about Cobain and GH5 would reiterate WHY people are upset about it. It would only take a sentence or two: "One of the issues that lead to Cobain's suicide was the commercialization of his work."
Yet Cobain signed a contract with a commercial record label and even agreed to do a performance for MTV Unplugged (You cant sell out any harder then MTV Unplugged). Cobain was just trying to capitalize on counterculture to sell to his fanbase and it's seemed to work very well.

I honestly didn't see why this was a big deal in the first place.
Then again I don't know anything about music.

It pretty much comes to either Activision pulling a fast one on Courtney Love to use a well known image in their dipshit game, or Courtney Love just looking for a fast buck, and then looking for additional attention with her tweet. I have no doubt Kurt enjoyed the songs that were put into GH5, but I don't think he would have signed off on Activision using his image with them. As to why Activision is using their banhammer in this case, smells of gross overuse of copyright laws, but they will get away with it. There's too little against them to make a case. Sooner or later, though, some company is going to overdo it, and we will get the scrutiny at copyright laws that should be done.
