So there are some actors like Michael Cera who basically play themselves in every movie. Bill Murray does this and it always rocks, but when most people do it it's just kind of ...lame... seeing the same character over and over in every movie. So who are some of your favourite actors who can genuinely act, in as many different types of roles as possible?

At the top of my list is Brad Pitt. Action in Troy, comedy in the Oceans movies, a ridiculous character in Burn After Reading (he's just about the only good thing in it, actually), hallucination in Fight Club... it seems like every time he does a movie it's a complete 180 from the one he did last. Top. Of. My. List.

Matt Damon's pretty good too, though his range is a little smaller IMO.

I love Will Ferrel's range.[footnote]No, not really.[/footnote]

And Kevin Spacey. He's pretty awesome.

Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges, Don Cheadle, Jamie Foxx, Tom Cruise (though he hasn't made anything good lately. However, I strongly recommend "Collateral"), Robert Duvall, Bill Murray (see "Lost in Translation"), Jim Carrey (his new stuff sucks, but look up "The Truman Show" and "Man on the Moon", as well as "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". He is really an excecllent actor when given the right material).

Ian McKellan, Viggo Mortensen, Al Pacino, Sean Connery, Jack Nicholson, and of course; Morgan Freeman.

Also, there's no criteria for them to be dead or alive, is there?

Then I'll also say Marlon Brando. That man's a legend.

Jim Carey has had some good serious roles, although I think he's at his best when he just plays a zany nutjob.

Tom Hanks is this also. Who else could go from playing a mentally-retarded man to playing one of the Apollo 13 astronauts and have it be believable?

Gary Oldman, Johnny Depp, Daniel Day Lewis, Ian McKellen, Alan Rickman, Benecio Del Toro, Gregory Peck, Viggo Mortensen, Josh Brolin. There's more but I think that is sufficient.

Jen Taylor (Zoey - L4D, Cortana - Halo, Princess MFin' Peach - Brawl)

Ron Pearlman (father duffy - I sell the Dead, Justice- Afro Samurai and sooooooo many more just look at his imdb.com profile the man is in stuff with out you even realizing it's him)

Those are my two picks based on range.

I'm an actress my self and range is youre main tool of the trade. For example recently I was in a production of "Night, Mother". I played Thelma a 87 year old mother who is desprately tring to keep her daughter from taking her own life. I'm 23. the role I got right after? Glory in "Almost Maine". Glory is a hitchhiker who carrys her broken heart in a bag. If you can't play charactors who are different from yourself it's terriblely hard to find work.
