I've had the page ads, the video overlays, the pre-video ads and the captcha ads like you. As the site is free I'm still not saying The Escapist needs to take them down, but yes, they are by far my least favourite thing about the site.

i don't see any recruitment drive things, maybe the 1st 5-10 vids have a 30 second unskippable car ad with the same overlay, but other than that, it's fine

yeah i'm staring to lose it. I fucking hate it when i go to click on a link and get blasted onto another site because i picked the same moment the ad desides to take over 3/4 of my screen.

this is almost on the level with malware

Where are these CAPTCHAs ? - I haven't encountered one yet.
Because you only have one post. Every five-or-so posts, you're required to retype a certain message for the post to be... posted.

If you stick around, you'll see it enough. Also, welcome to the Escapist.

I am not going to view an ad to make a forum post.

Need ads on the site for revenue? OK Understahdable

Indroduce memberships to ge more revenue without taking away content from non-members. That's ok

Introducing captcha for forum posts? Ok, fine.

Having to click an ad to LEARN what the advertisement is about so I can answer a captcha just post on the damn forum? No, not cool. Not cool at all, and really disappointing.

With traditional capchas, at least you're helping them make digital books, or something.
Wait what? Explain please, how does presenting me with text that is all blurry and weird make a book?
Well, its just recapcha, so I suppose I just misspoke there. But this is what I mean: http://www.google.com/recaptcha/learnmore

And yes, now I'm seeing them. This is severely unpleasant.
Okay, I admit I didn't read all of the page about recaptcha but what struck me as funny is; if that the recaptcha is to help OCR to read words... But the words shown on the captcha are already known what would be the need to ask about them again? They would have to be known characters otherwise the turing test wouldn't work.

this is probably already answered, but with reCAPTCHA 1 of the 2 words you see is known, the other is not, ofcourse the only issue is that OCR would then know both of the words, which means there is computer software that can recognize it which means people need to start coming up with their own captcha's

I just got one that pretty much had me either sit through the bloody ad but atleast was nice enough to offer a skip function so I could just skip the ad and then type in the easy to understand words.

So for this one I'm rather torn, I hate ad based captcha's but atleast this one let's me skip the crap ad and just type in the words needed. I honestly thought the Escapist scrapped that junk and went back to the last style of captcha's they once had.

Edit: I'm not screaming and throwing a fit saying things like "I'll never post here again!" and the like but just confused by the Escapist's stance on this sort of thing.

I noticed the return of the solvemedia captchas but it hasn't shown me an ad. I get nice readable captchas now though, so thumbs up for that at least.

I know what you mean and they pissed me off immensely (probably just because it was xbox advertisement xD ). If they just want to put a picture in the captcha that's alright, but making me actually type out "play xbox" seems bullshit to me. Fortunately I haven't seen those captchas in a while so hopefully the escapists stop using them
