Ok he was alright in his original form at the start of the movie (would of been perfect if he make a 4th wall moment) but then they decided to change him into that "thing" at the end![/qutoe]

In all seriousness, I have to agree with the "movie" The Last Airbender. Remember how Bob said that the cinematography was great? It wasn't. Like, at all.


And at least Evolution *gag* tried to do something different. Sure, it fell strait onto it's face, but tried to do something cool.

I'm gonna say the Rebuild movies (Neon Genesis Evangelion).

It's way too similar to the original show to be seen as a seperate thing, but it changes so many aspects within the original story concept and characters that it loses it's soul.

You dislike the Rebuild films? I don't mind them personally, I see them as a seperate thing. And plenty of changes have been made, mostly in 2.22 and it looks like more are to come in the next two films, especially since the last film is supposed to be an entirely new ending.

Plus, it looks nice. Hideaki Anno is out of the depression he was in during the original show so I think he intended to make Rebuild more optimistic anyway and apparantely how he always wanted it to be, so its no surprise to me that Shinji seems a little less angsty and such.

I'm gonna say the Rebuild movies (Neon Genesis Evangelion).

Plus, it looks nice. Hideaki Anno is out of the depression he was in during the original show so I think he intended to make Rebuild more optimistic anyway and apparantely how he always wanted it to be, so its no surprise to me that Shinji seems a little less angsty and such.

Well, I own both movies on blu-ray simply because I'm convicted to this series for as long as I live. But the only thing I genuinely like about them are the updated visuals and the tweeks to some of the Angels. I like for instance how when the Angels die they bleed... a lot, how the sea is red and lifeless, and how Antarctica is now just a giant ominous hole in the planet.

The story and the characters however felt severely lacking. I know a lot of people hated the characters for being selfcentered and generally fucked up in the original show, but that's why I found them so gosh darn interesting. By making them way more level headed the story is turning into what the original tried to break down; A mecha show with young heroic pilots.

And there were also a few things that happen in it that just got me a bit pissed off:

Like how in Rebuild 1 Misato takes Shinji straight into Terminal Dogma just to prove a point, eventhough simply wandering to closely to the door of that place in the original would get you shot on sight regardless of rank.

And how in Rebuild 2 Rei and Asuka are tripping over eachother making Shinji boxed lunches. *ugh*

The original always had a very strict context, at least it did to me. But by deviating from that within what is basically the same story and switching characters' places it becomes a total mess. I had rather they'd told a completely different story with different characters, or made a movie depicting all the events following the first 10 years or so after Second Impact.

Since these are films and not a 26 episode on going TV show, they have to set up the backdrop to the plot earlier - i.e. Lilith so then newer audiences can understand things more instead of waiting 2 years to understand just what the hell the angels are aiming for. The producers are intending to make the series more accessible to new audiences.

This is the same thing with the lunchboxes thing, they can't make the emotions Asuka and Rei have for Shinji as subtle as they were in the original show, they have to make it more obvious because of... well, its a movie and because they want to appeal to a wider audience.

I agree that it is probably the most accurate to the books (though why no one can make two separate movies for each book, is beyond me). Pretty much everyone is in it as well. Really, there is no reason to not watch this one.

Yes, that's the one. As tv movies go it's got quite alot of well known British actors in it, and a few American ones too. Weird how no one seems to know about it, as it's defiantly one of the more accurate and entertaining versions.

I guess that's kind of my issue with it; I don't feel this story lends itself well for a movie structure.

But then NGE has always been kind of a personal experience for everyone who saw it, stories that you need to meet halfway tend to be like that. So when a new iteration is created it's inevitably going to bump heads with the interpretations of certain fans... like me.

While the, albeit short-lived, Dresden Files TV show wasn't too shabby, there were some things I just could not look at without disapproval.

He's driving a jeep instead of the Blue Beetle? Murphy, well, just isn't Murphy? His staff is a hockey stick?

I'm sure that when The Sandman HBO-series comes (yes people, it's in the works. You may once again thank your deity for HBO) I will have plenty of geared hate for some flaws in adaptation.

Maybe Mos Def playing Ford Prefect in The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy. Just the fact that he didn't fit the character's physical description. He didn't do a bad job. So maybe it's not a good fit for this thread.

I adored Mos Def as Ford actually. For me he the fact that he didn't fit the physical description at all was well compensated by the fact that he truly captured the spirit of the character.
