Movie adaptations past, present and upcoming; which ones just should not be (or have been) made? Video games, books, re-makes, whatever, the original source material doesn't matter.

I'm just going to get this out of the way right off the bat: live-action Akira. I just watched Akira for the first time last night, and without gushing too much, it was pretty damn great. But among the factors that made it great was the stunning animation. I just don't see why there needs to be a live-action version. What's more, it's getting so heavily Americanized [http://www.cracked.com/blog/5-urgent-questions-about-live-action-akira-remake/] and altered [http://www.cracked.com/blog/the-actual-live-action-akira-script-worse-than-you-think/] that the end result will probably wind up looking something like this:

Essentially, they're removing everything that made Akira good and unique and running it through the Hollywood filter, then running it through again, then again about ten more times.

Oh, and it's PG 13. What the fuck?

Actually, everything in that video I could easily see fitting into anime (this is the medium that gave us Bleach, Bobobo, and Plastic Little, after all). At least you linked to something explaining why the adaptation won't be that awesome.

Oh, and there shouldn't have been a Rambo saturday morning cartoon.

It's going to bad. But hey, Hollywood thinks your average American wouldn't be able to understand an adaptation very close to the original.

After all, those people are foreigners, and therefore, very scary and weird.

I wish Hollywood would stop treating Americans like idiots, it's no wonder the rest of the world thinks they're ignorant.

This thread belongs on off topic, not gaming discussion.

One exemplar example, the 4kids dub of One Piece.

For everything else, go here [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AdaptationDecay].

Starship Troopers.

Find the other thread of the same vein and you'll see my reasons.

EDIT:

While not a huge fan of Akira I understand your ire.

Does anyone have any examples of Hollywoodized foreign stuff films that havn't been a complete train-wreck?

Apart from True Lies, I've seen La Totale - it's not that great. Departed was alright too.

I hear "The Magnificent Seven" is pretty good, and "A Fistful of Dollars" was essentially a remake of a Japanese samurai film.

"No-one went broke underestimating the American public", or words to that effect.

Dunno who said that, but they would appear to be right. Stupid crap sells, things that require a bit more thinking might not.
