Ads having reverse effect?

Someone else started a topic a little ways down about the high number of ads affecting their computer's performance, so I thought I'd chime in with my perception on all the ads.

Some ads are fine. The little ones that just sit along the top or side of a page are fine. They're there, just doing their thing. They don't get in my way, and I don't have to pay them any attention if I'm not interested in the product.

Then, there are the other banner ads. The ones that roll out and cover the page if you brush one, single little pixel of them. These are quite annoying, but if you roll over them, then it's your own fault.

Then we have the banner ads that unroll and cover the page automatically. This is unwarranted, and just plain annoying. I understand that companies have to do all that they can to push a product in this ADD riddled, instant-gratification day and age, but this is a little much. Forcing us to acknowledge your ad and watch your crappy, B-grade video until we find whichever corner you hid the nigh-microscopic X so we can get on with what we wanted to do is a bit of a dick move.

Then there are the video ads. These aren't so bad if you just watch one or two videos. I, on the other hand, like to mute my TV and run a mini Zero Punctuation marathon while I'm level grinding. This means that every 3 minutes or so, I have to watch your ad. I can safely say, for me at least, your ad is having the opposite effect. Yelling at me every 3 minutes about how awesome people who eat Slim-Jim's are and how awesome I'll be if I eat them too has pretty much guaranteed that I will not touch a Slim-Jim for the next decade. And now it's making me damn glad that I don't give $15 a month to WoW anymore, and has ruined any slight urge I had to pick it up again (this is made slightly worse knowing that nearly everyone who is going to buy Cataclysm planned on buying it since the day it was announced. This is no underground company getting an indie game out in the world, it's the biggest f'ng game on the planet!)

I understand the point of ads, on both sides. The companies get their product out there, and the site makes money which, in turn, it uses so that it can be free for us to use. I appreciate that, sincerely. This is a great site, a great community, and I would hate to see it become a pay-site. But being barraged by the same ad every couple of seconds has basically had the opposite effect on me, and has made me swear never to give these pushy, aggravating people any more of my money than I already have.

Anyone else feel the same?

advertising doesn't need to be effective with everyone to be effective. The very fact that there is an advertising industry online, and that people pay real money to get their name onto your website is proof that it must work somehow - investors would have to see a return on that or else they just wouldn't bother.

If you're talking about the specifics on the Escapist, pay them like 20 bucks for a year, and you get no ads, and get high res videos

I was boycotting Slim Jim as long as they advertised on this site, but then I remembered that my arteries aren't clogged yet and they needed some plaque. Seriously, they're pretty delicious to me.

It's when they break teh 30 second mark that I get a little fed up.

I really dont' mind ads too much. They're there. Whooppiee. This is my leisure time. I have no where to be.

The WoW Cataclysm ads on this site piss me the fuck off.
I can't tell you how many times the ad expanded and I ended up clicking on it by accident when trying to navigate the forums.

I hate how Youtube is having adds on everything now. I was watching a bunch of elpressador videos last night. Every single times I clicked on a video I had to watch the same damn Toyota commercial.

Some Asian with a child in the back seat of his car, is talking about a new system that uses the friction created when you break, to power your car. Then something about using that in an amusment park to make it self sustaining.

But the breaking powered car thing isn't new. My father was talking about that years ago, some of the buses where he works have that system.

Edit: And most adds have the reverse effect on me. Simply because of the fact that the ad's themselves are so damn stupid. We've all seen ones that leave us going 'wtf?' and I mostly laugh at how dumb some are. 'Hey send us all your gold! You can trust the postal system and the local mailman that you know smokes pot and has taken out several mailboxes; and you can certainly trust us to give you a fair return on your gold!'

Or how about..'Buy a Snuggie!'...no just no. 'Slim Jim?!' No...

I am however fond of Geico commercials.

Not a single advert I've seen has been relevant to my interests and as a result I have never followed them. Always ignored. If I want something I'll look for it, I don't want it shoved down my throat.

At least internet ads (Most of them, anyway) have no sound, unlike GO COMPAAAAAAAAAAARE / WEBUYANYCAR....

God those adverts are unbearable.

An ad never works on me unless it's something that I would buy anyway, which probably means I already know about it.

I find that the ads on Youtube are often more aggravating than the Slim Jim ones, and I personally hate the later anyway. But The Escapist vids are worth the brief interruption. I actually find the banners to be worse simply because sometimes the top one gets messed up on my browser and covers entire buttons like "Videos, Reviews, Community, Forums," or even down to the "reply" button on some occasions.

But Youtube? Oh, I wonder how this vid is....
*asinine Sony ad*
Dammit... and the video sucked, too!!!

Yeah, it's pretty bad when 30 seconds of your life from a bad video become a minute because Company X decided to make the most banal, irksome, and repetitive advertisement to stick on every other Youtube vid. That certainly has the opposite effect on me because I begin to link whatever the ad's product is with grievances.

I hate the ads that ask if you really want to close them and the full page ones are freaking horrible.

Yeah, the new methods of advertising are making me miss pop-unders. For me, though, it depends on whether or not I can stomach the commercial. I like WoW, so I'm okay with the Cata ads, but I cringe when I see Slim-Jims now (despite actually liking Edge.) Still, I understand they're a necessary evil.

Advertisements should never ever detract from the site's main content. As soon as they start to do that, you have a problem.
Also, invasive and intrusive advertisements not only have the effect of turning me off the product/service, but also have the effect of turning me off the website that features that ad; so how much money will you'll be losing if I'm not visiting your site? Think about that for a second.

The Slim Jim ones I don't mind, they are only like 10-15 seconds long and are done before I get too annoyed. However I agree that the Cataclysm ones are way too long, 35 second video every time I want to watch one 4-5 minute video is just plain stupid.

Meh ads don't interest me all that much but yeah I do hate those ads that pop up randomly and the close button is so damn small.
