Watching Hulu, there was an add for tide. They had an old lay say this line.

"You don't know how very basic essentials are, until you have none."

Any idea what this means? I can surmise that there is a word missing that would have it make sense. Seriously though, how could they not catch this mistake?

Anyway, have you seen ads where the wording makes no sense?

Grammatically, if you link 'basic' with the 'very' rather than the 'essentials' it does make some semblance of sense.

It's just worded incredibly poorly.

That line makes sense, although I had to read it twice to get it. It's awkwardly worded, and that comma just doesn't belong there.

Yes, I want to trust my money for buying tickets to live concerts with people who don't even know who's actually performing said concert.

And I have no idea what that ad you mentioned means.

As a matter of fact. This woman's quote makes next to no sense considering the emphasis she put on "basic" when referring to "essentials." The question that I HAVE is how is it possible to consider essential needs "basic" after having lost them????? I'll tell you what. I hate this ad and I think the Tide people are totally ragging on this lady every time they air it. I think she smokes too much pot and she put two words backwards. That's what I think. My corrected version: "You don't know how very essential basics are until you have none." There's no other way this would make sense. You can't come to a realization of essentials being basic from hardship because "basic" would refute the idea of endurance altogether. Tide - Trash this ad and move on. THANKS!

I think she meant to say "you don't know how very essential basics are, until you have none" I think she just transposed essentials and basics. she is talking about laundry, so I assume she mans clean undies and stuff like that. It DOES drive me crazy EVERY TIME I see the commercial. Seriously Tide, you didn't notice that?

I think the most common slip-ups are made in the use of apostrophes. Apart from the vast number of people who can't grasp the simple difference between "its" and "it's", poster makers seem to be under the delusion that if a word ends in an "s", then it must have an apostrophe. I remember once seeing a massive banner in PC World proclaiming some service or other, and it had about six apostrophes, none of which were in the right place. It was a little embarrassing, because the banner was so large that the apostrophes in question were around a foot wide.

Note: I don't include greengrocers in this condemnation, because, as PTerry pointed out, they're contractually obliged to never use punctuation correctly.

That ad has terrible wording but does actually make sense, I think when it says 'basic' it means 'important' but I could be wrong.
