First of all, this isn't intended to be advertising, but if I infringe any rules, please let me know and the post will be deleted or something.

A couple of weeks ago I found this free 80-minute mix by Cookie Monsta, my favorite dubstep artist. The link to the download was on his official myspace, so I take it for granted that I wasn't stealing it. The thing with is that it contains adverts for something called takeflight.com - I haven't visited the site so I have no idea what's on there, but it doesn't really matter. The form these ads take is "Take Flight presents:" before the title of the mix as well as the name being whispered three times throughout the one hour and twenty minute long mix.

The mix was made from more or less well-known tracks by Cookie Monsta, so I assume (without knowing anything) that takeflight.com have approached Cookie Monsta with a sum of money saying "create a mix from your music, put our name on it and put it out for free, and we will grant you this cash"

It means that fans like me can get free music without stealing from the artist while he in turn still gets some payment for his hard work with creating the music.

What do you think about this, dear Escapists? Is it a good way to promote music or is it further, unnecessary commercialization of the music industry?

If I had to choose between stealing my music or getting it for free with ads mixed into it, I'll choose the high seas any day.

It's better still to just buy the music of course, but no way I'm tolerating any kind of pollution in my musics. D:

I guess it would depend. A tasteful advert here and there I could get over. And if it's a way for people to get free music AND artists to get paid it's got to be a good thing

The moment a punk band agrees to this, punk will have officially died forever...

It's a horrible idea but I hate music thieves so they can suffer all the advertisements in the world. Any decent recording artist wouldn't be seen dead by selling out so unshamedly....

Of course it isn't an idea that can be applied to any music, with metal, punk or other "rebellious" form of music it'd be outright distasteful. But as is the case in the example (the artist mixing together some music he've allready created for other purposes) and the amount of adverting being as little as it is, I think it's alright.

Rather that than stealing the music, at least.
