Advice on Cropping a Picture

I have a drawing on my computer that I got from my drawing note book. I want to crop it out and put it on to another background. Because my notebook paper isn't totally white, I can't easily crop out the picture. I don't have Photoshop either. Does anyone know what I can do?

Download GIMP if you don't already have it and try this [http://acedar.blogspot.com/2008/01/gimp-tutorial-removing-white.html]. There are other methods, but if you have a single-colour background I usually find that this one works best.

set the background to a colour not used (like red), then use the brush and/or pen to accurately crop it, then re-colour the red to white

That's how I basically did all my cropping as photoshop wasn't always 100% accurate (and before I had PS too)
