There's this guy at my school, he wants to start a band with him playing guitar and me playing bass. I kinda liked the idea, until i heard him play. He wasn't brilliant.
On top of this he got two guys i don't like at all to be singer and drummer.
I'd feel like a complete dick if i quit now, since i already got his hopes up,and his chances of finding another bass player are slim. So what should i do?

That doesn't sound like a very good situation for you, if you don't want to do it you need to just tell him. If you're not a complete dick about it, things will work out better than you going into a band that most likely won't work out. Better now than later down the road, basically.

Say you have other commitments. Cite that you want to spend more time on schoolwork or something.

Good advice, or just say you don't really get on with the others too well.

Or you could try and make it work, after all he can only get better.

"I liked the idea at first... but... we have to talk.
Not to be offensive or anything, but after the first few rehearsals, I don't think this has much of a future for me, personally. I still wish you guys the best of luck.
Sorry to say this, but I won't be sticking around much longer. It wouldn't be fair to you to drop out unannounced all of a sudden though.
As soon as you find a replacement, I'm out... and please do find one soon, because I'm out eventually anyway."

Honestly, I'd use the time to just have fun playing with guys. Even if they suck, or you don't like them, jamming can be a great time. Take this opportunity to practice with a whole band (Way different then on your own), and then keep your eyes and ears open for other bands looking for a bassist. If you find a better gig, say 'so long'.

Besides, if he's a terrible as you say, it won't last long anyways.

Dude, it's all well and good trying to spare his feelings, but if the band isn't going to be any good then it's better for everyone if you tell him that now. If he isn't any good at guitar, and if you don't get on well with the rest of the band, then this is just a recipe for disaster. Tell him, try and make it gentle, but tell him nevertheless. If you aren't happy being in the band then there's no point being in it in the first place. Be in it to enjoy yourself, above all else. That's the main thing, and that's what you need to consider here.

I would say that some things have come up with your life, and that you can't really spend time with that group. It does largely depend upon how well you know this person, and so how likely he would believe you though. If you don't think that will work, then I guess you ought to try to be honest with him and say that you are no longer interested.

Yeah I was asked to join a band literally the day I picked up a guitar... it didn't go to well...

String them along til you find another band you want to play in. It's practice for you as a band member, and there's always the chance that with enough time the rest of 'em will get good too.
