Does anyone else have an internet filter which is so aggressive that it filters some of the topics here on the escapist.

I think it reacts to words and things. One of the topics it filtered was "Getting in shape".

Just want to know if i'm the only one encountering this problem.

And any reaction to having filters are welcome to. Does a filter make the internet world a better place? (not for me it doesn't)

A filter at my old school blocked us out of a page because it contained

"Entertainment"

Someone, please explain why the hell it would do this?

Is this a filter you've set up yourself, or is some IT bloke at say, your school or work or the owner of the library in charge?
No, the filter is my internet provider. So i can't turn it on or of. And since i still live at home i can't just change providers.

A filter at schools i can understand, you do not want young kids to wander around the net getting ideas.

school filters can be beat if you use an iPhone and use their internet. Though it on'y works on schools that use both ethernet and wifi.

My school's internet filter is somewhat overzealous, though not ridiculously so. At least it still lets me on the Escapist.

[small]In fact, I'm posting from the school library now. Woo.[/small]

Fucking hell, is your IP run by Nazis or something?

Even with the topic at hand, the Nazi comparsion is not quite valid. You could substitute "Ministry of Truth" to be more accurate.

I've never had a problem with filters. My home connectuon is naturally unrestricted, and when I used to be in school I had an admin boot CD that allowed me to access what I wanted.

Not that I used it for the internet. I just used it to send people status messages on other computers and log them out for no reason. I've grown up since then!

Anything to do with video media or provocative attire usually gets blocked for me. Sometimes it's really annoying.

I'm afraid that our school filter beats that on a regular basis, filtering things out because they dare to involve the topic of 'computing/internet'.

Other highlights are being told in PE class to research drugs and other substances, only to have the filter block us at every turn under the category of, you guessed it, 'drugs'.

They recently put a new one in at my school, and it sucks. It won't let half the student body access their emails (anyone who uses MSN and a few others. Yahoo and Google aren't blocked, so I'm ok), for some reason, so that really shoots to hell the idea of emailing projects to yourself.

The funny thing is, there's one room where all the computers have to be unblocked because they teach Computer Programming there, so everyone knows to go there if they want to access, say, Facebook.

Heh. My college has NO FILTERS. But my high school had REALLY strict filters. I couldn't access GameFAQs or any other gaming site. When they were turned on, at least.

Same, my school filter pretty much purges anything on sight.
"the website you requested was blocked because the following word(s) appeared: 'happy'" o_O?

A website about mechanics was blocked because the filter took some words to the extreme. We all know some words have double meanings - and this filter decided that obviously "large drill" didn't mean a B&D power tool.
Damit! Some of us insane machine-smiths need websites that sell power tools and parts!

My high school filter doesn't let us type 'marijuana' or any other drug in Google search, which is really annoying when I have to write paper about it.
