im a console gamer and id say i was average at FPS but what annoys me is aim assist. people can use it to lock on with snipers etc.

but the epitome of what is wrong with aim assist hit me like an unexpected kick in face today while playing COD 4. i use the skorpion and im sure you know that its ammo consumption is somewhat low and my ammo was deminished because my opponent had deviously used juggernaut and absorbed my bullets like a dry sponge, so i knew he was almost dead so i whipped out my USP like james bond and aimed at his head and as i done so his team mate waltzed infront of him and my aim locked onto his team mate, i hasten to add that i was unduly defeated by my foe at such a crucial moment as i was 1 kill away from a helicopter

so i ask thee, do you think we need aim assist. i say we throw of the shackles of gaming oppression and start aiming.

Yes. We do need aim assist.
Have you ever played a console FPS without aim assist. It's difficult. Very difficult.

Thats why PC FPS's tend to play better. There is no need for an aim assist, so it is never implemented -- unless some pathetic person downloads a hack.

Aim assist makes the game more difficult for me!

I can't count the amount of times I've been about to shoot a guy, then someone else has walked by, and my mystical crosshairs decide lock on to him instead and totally fuck up my shot, so I miss both of them, and get gunned down. I must look like a right idiot to everyone else, shooting thin air...

These problem are due to BADLY implemented aim assist, not aim assist per se.
Without aim assist, and be it oh so subtle, console fps would be utterly impossible.

my sincere empathy goes to you sir, not to mention when you witness the atrocity on you killcam as your foe sprays at someone else and their aim drifts upon your head

I play Reach alot atm, i'm sure it does have aim assist but the wonderful thing is you don't notice it. I've never aimed at one guy then have aim assist move my crosshairs to another guy. If i miss, it's usually because i'm terribad at the game.

No it's not. It just takes some practise. I find FPS's on PC to be much more difficult than on consoles.

I can NEVER play a console FPS effectively without aim assist. That's one of the reasons why I prefer PC shooters. The control stick camera is too clunky to play a First Person game well, I find.

Medal of Honour online has really persistant aim assist. It's quite funny sometimes when your cursor is already pointing at an enemy coming up the stairs, through a wall.

I'm pretty sure most games with aim assist have options to turn it off. You've just missed it somehow.

I hate aim assist on console FPS's, always screws up my aim.
Its horrible on PC FPS's though it makes aiming almost impossable.

I almost always turn it off. Not because it makes it that much more annoying, it just feels a bit like cheating to me.

It's almost hilarious how many enemies I've only noticed because the game decided to lock onto them. What's not hilarious is that the game hijacks my camera and leads my point of view into a wall while a battle rages off to my left or right and is steadily coming closer to killing me.

Medal of Honor did a lot of things well in my opinion, but the aim assist was definitely not one of those things.

OT: Aim assist has its place, and when implemented subtly, it can be really, really useful. However, overdoing it can be obnoxious.

The game would play like crap without aim assist. Believe me, I've played Halo PC with a gamepad and no aim assist.

I'd complain about that more but my biggest problem with Halo PC on a gamepad is how poorly the move controls worked on an analog stick. When you can't even walk around properly you don't quite care about shooting things.

Metroid prime 1&2 had lock-on, and some homing weapons, but it fit because it took emphasis off of pointing the armcannon in the right direction and about timing your attacks and dodging enemy movements and locating weak points, making moving during combat hectic, but manageable due to the lock-on
