Kinda lame as my first topic here, but I gotta start somewhere, right?

Anyway, what is the air quality in your local area? Good, bad, fugly? What's causing it? Are you contributing? Will this thread be infested with farts and B.O. jokes?

Onward discussion!
---

Due to the "OMFG Oil Crisis" people 'round where I live have been buying wood and coal burning furnaces, (Sickeningly, it's people who can afford the price of oil anyway, they just don't wanna pay up) and it's becoming a cold, snowy version of China up here!

Already the EPA is on our asses about Fairbanks putting out too much pollution, but these guys have only compounded the damn problem. People won't even be able to breathe once the inversion sets in.

---

So have at it people, what's it like in your area?

Virginia is covered in dumps. The air in some places smells pretty bad because of all of the out of state garbage.

I'll divvy this up to make it manageable.

Air quality in dorm room: could be better. I spilled some milk a few days ago and the smell won't come out.

Air quality in city of university: Above average. Its not an industrial city, so there is only really car exhaust.

I used to live in Hamilton, and industrial city southwest of Toronto, and I am told that the air there is terrible. I never noticed while I was there, but after my family moved north to the countryside I noticed an immediate difference. You can see the stars...

Down here in Bethesda (as in Bethesda Softworks), it isn't too bad. I live in the suburbs, and most people around here are pretty thoughtful.

Air in my room: Rather nice and cool
Air in my house: Moist no clue why
Air in my home city: Little flat ...not entirely sure how else I can describe it.

I live in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. We're right across the river from Detroit, MI, and so the air's pretty bad. You see, these cities live on the auto industry, so there are lots of factories and a big orange cloud that you can see when approaching the city.

I have asthma, and I know why.

The air here is purdy fresh and sweet, at least it is until the day after the rain stops then people get to burning brush they cleared out, then everything gets hazy, but after a week or so they stop and the fresh clear air fills my lungs with joy.

Actually not a bad topic, congrats. I live in southern Ontario now, and the air doesn't bother me. I've heard a lot of people complain, but I honestly think it's people being told that the air is bad, and thus they notice it. Although there I places around here that have days where the air is bad.

I will say though that the most pristine air imaginable can be found in rural Saskatchewan. I grew up there. Miles and miles of nothing but fields. You can find places where there are only a few hundred people in a few hundred square kilometers and just breathe.

I can't even imagine being in Beijing or New Delhi.

I live out by Winnipeg. Not enough people to cause any noticeable pollution. Not that you can smell anything through frozen nostrils.

I live in the centre of Nottingham... it's a busy city, so the air is just like any other city; polluted.
My home town of Rotherham, though smaller and with less traffic, is just as bad due to all the factories...

Just can't win.

Thanks, everyone. The posts were informative, some were funny, yet made me cringe at the same time. I'll never complain about the smoke up here again.

The air here is quite clean (one of the lowest CO2 concentrations of any city in the whole country, funnily enough).....

I like the air in Hawaii better, though.....Less...Dry.......

Sydney's pretty good, in some spots. Where I am is pretty clear but the moon still does get that horrible yellow tint on occasion.

I live between a large Dump, one the busiest Sea Ports in the UK, a Tannery and a Motorway. The quality of air is actually pretty good.
Three cheers for EU emitions laws!

Suburban Australia.

It so clear you can taste the time. Makes a huge saving on watches.
