Even though this ship isn't in working order, in it's current state, I think we, the escapist forum users should each pitch in to purchase this ship in the hopes of creating a mobile escapist headquarters.

HMS Invincible is for sale by tender. Laid down in 1973 at Vickers Shipbuilding, Barrow-in-Furness, she was completed in 1980. She is currently stable for tow, subject to buyer confirmation.
Displacement - Current 17000 Tonnes
Estimated metal weight - 10000 Tonnes
Estimated metal % - 95% mild steel
Length - OA 210m, W/L 193m
Draught - Fwd 5.2m, Mid 5.8m, Aft 5.8m

How am I being silly? This would be a legitimate purchase plus it's recycling. if every member of the escapist pitched in $1 we would have enough to buy it and go on an escapist cruise and visit yahtzee.

China bought a decommissioned Russian aircraft carrier so they could convert it to a nuclear system and modernize it.

Of course I think its still sitting in a harbor somewhere, rusting away.

There's always a catch (or hidden costs) with these things.

I remember my local airport was selling their Vulcan Bomber on E-Bay for a relatively small price, but the catch was that as soon as you bought it you'd have to start paying £1,000 a week rent for keeping it on site, then it would cost at least £20,000 to dismantle and move it and finally you would no doubt need planning permission from the local Council of wherever you decide to move it too.

I'd imagine HMS Invincible would command significant rent from whoever berths her. She would definitely cost a lot to dismantle and recycle, and towing her to another location would be costly too, providing you had planning permission to add a aircraft carrier to the skyline of her new home.

It would require a significant investment or capital just to take ownership and responsibility for an object the size of HMS Invincible, so the easiest thing to do with her would be to tow her out to sea and scuttle her in relatively shallow, calm water off the coast, making a new dive attraction and artificial reef.

hmm, this is a British aircraft carrier,otherwise id be interested, kinda requires an air fleet of copters or VTOL aircraft, hopefully one day we will get an aircraft carrier that actually accepts aircraft without throwing a tantrum any time you invite one of your friends over who has a proper aircraft that actually requires a runway not a tiny stopping platform.
VTOL is cool but really what is much cooler is being able to put tactically modern planes in a strategically useful carrier that serves a purpose other than Russian anti submarine warfare, cold war kinda ended apparently.

guess id still put up the cash for HMS trident if its ever resold, that's a "kewel" looking ship.

70s carrier says "im a toxic mo fo", we normally send stuff like this to china to extract all the nasties first or a couple of places in the UK, i agree the most realistic fate is a scuttling at sea but i rekon the gov is probably seeing if they can flog it so they can make money scuttling it instead of having to pay for the privilege themselves

Ah it's just a small one used mostly for harriers and choppers, the deck's too small for actual non-VTOL jets. I wish they had sold some of the American aircraft carriers from World War 2.

Also, apparently this ship served in the Falklands War, and the Argentinians claim to have damaged it but the British deny it, they're obviously 'covering up the dent on their car' haha.
