Alabama Strikes Again

A few months ago, this outstanding mother in Alabama [http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=a88_1249007894&p=1] of the US was caught dragging her child through a Verizon store on a backpack leash and gets some jail time out of it. Video was shot on a cellphone by a fellow patron after hearing all the screams which the mother could not have fathomed would have been recorded. This video doesn't have any sound, which makes it look like the child is pretty content with being dragged by a leash.

According to Floyd County Jail records: "Melissa Catherine Smith-Means, 37, of Gaylesville, Ala., was arrested by Rome police around 12:30 p.m. She was charged with felony first-degree cruelty to children. Police say she was observed by customers and employees at a store on Broad Street, dragging a small child around by a backpack leash. The child had visible marks on the neck from the incident." She now remains in jail without bail.

All joking aside, seems like sort of an extreme response to dragging around a child that's throwing a temper tantrum. What do you guys think?

EDIT: To make sure this is perfectly clear, the leash was attached to his backpack harness which isn't connected to the neck; the "visible marks on the neck from the incident" was caused by the leash itself rubbing against the side of his neck during the dragging which can be easily seen in the video that the cord was coming up from his back under the left shoulder and rubbed along the left side of the child's neck. The leashes themselves are usually very rubbery; letting them stretch to absorb excessive force, so the probability of actually hurting choking or breaking the child's neck are pretty low and certainly no more than dragging any other limp child along a smooth floor by, say, its arms.

I think that if my kid was bad, thats what I would do, but not in public. you don't beat a kid, you spank them so that they know that they did something wrong. if you break a bone, you've gone way too far.

It's crazy how she walks along like it's normal. I'm honestly not sure what to say about it. Could you imagine how awkward it would be for the person at the register.
"yeah I'm here to pay my bill."
"you do know your dragging your child by his neck through store right?"
"Shit!"

Sadly it was by a backpack leash, the marks on his neck were from the leash rubbing against it while she was dragging him. Also, there has been found a close up on the bag she was carrying.

That kid didn't even look like it was alive... it was just lying being dragged through filth.

If me or my sister had tried a temper tantrum at the shops when we were kids, the immediate response would have been a kick in the rear end or a smack across the back of the head.

I plan to use the "don't fuck with me, I own a shotgun, a shovel, 10 acres of land and I can make another kid to replace you easily" method of childrearing.

As for the woman, dragging your kid around while it's screaming is pretty poor. She should have made it shut up before entering the store and subjecting the customers to noise pollution.

Personally I'm conflicted.
I hate parents that drag their kids on leashes.
But I also hate parents that let their kids run around stores unwatched and unattended.

I think I'll have to claim the leashes as the lesser of 2 evils.

Oh my... that's a tad disturbing. What if the kid had suffocated, or had his neck broken?

Oh my god.
What the fuck is wrong with her?
She coulda strangled the kid, broken it's neck, all kinds of things.
Not to mention the fact that she DRAGGED THE KID ACROSS THE FLOOR BY THE NECK.
...What's wrong with people these days?

If you even think you need to put a leash on a child you need to give your head a shake. It's demeaning to both you and the kid.

The title alone makes me want to hear the Imperial March done with banjos.

In all seriousness, it is a rather cruel thing to do. Best to teach them to behave in stores or just leave if they start throwing fits.

i thought it was hilarious, but over-the-top nonetheless. She should have held her composure better and handled the situation better, but goddamn kids can be annoying. I don't blame her for getting flustered, but i think jail time is a bit harsh

Lol. I wouldn't be surprised if she had a baby cage at home as well.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to have children. Ever.
Yeah, clear the gene pool up a little. The problem is that so many smart people never have children, accelerating our descent into stupidity. And then you get things like this story.
