Alan Wake for PC is "Still on Remedy's Hard Drives"

Remedy writer Sam Lake threw a bone to PC gamers today, saying that the code for the PC version of Alan Wake [http://www.amazon.com/Alan-Wake-Xbox-360/dp/B0010AYJXI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278694238&sr=1-1] is "still on our hard drives."

Remedy's Alan Wake began life as a PC title before Microsoft decided it wanted an Xbox 360 version as well, and then finally to make it an Xbox 360 exclusive. A lot of PC gamers were outraged over the move, but they also held out hope that one day the game would still come to their platform of choice. And while said [http://www.remedygames.com/] last month that the studio had "no plans" for a PC release, another Remedy man has suggested that maybe there is a reason for the mouse-and-keyboard crowd to hold on to hope.

"The code for a PC version of Alan Wake is still always on our hard drives," writer Sam Lake - real name Sami Järvi - told German site Google translated [http://www.digitalspy.com/gaming/interviews/a205203/oskari-hakkinen-alan-wake.html] and thus slightly mangled interview. "It would be unreasonable, this work - and believe us, since much work goes in there - [to] just throw it away."

Alan Wake launches in May as an Xbox 360 exclusive but Lake pointed out that there's no guarantee it will remain that way forever. "The latest example is the Stimulus Pack for Modern Warfare 2 [http://www.amazon.com/Call-Duty-Modern-Warfare-Xbox-360/dp/B00269QLI8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278694263&sr=1-1]. This will only appear on Xbox 360 and later for PC and PlayStation," he said. "I can well imagine that Alan Wake will suffer a similar fate."

"Suffer a similar fate" probably isn't the best translation, but you get what he means. Dare to dream, PC gamers!

Woohoo, there's still hope yet. So long as it doesn't have the dastardly DRM or WindowsLive.

Well, well, well.

That's good news. The PC version was canceled late in development, so if sales do alright, it'd be easy to finish it up and put out a PC version.

So basically, the only reason we might not get a PC version is because MS decided to be douchebags? Sounds about right...

I'm not sure with this one. Exclusive Xbox games have eventually come out for PC before, like Gears of War and Halo, why not Alan Wake?

I hope that Remedy do port it to PC. I was really looking forward to it, and was gutted when I found out that the PC version had been cancelled, as I don't have a 360. Remedy don't currently have any other games known to be in development, so it's feasible.

EDIT: Dammit! After googling the game, it turns out that it was intended to be Vista and DX10 only anyway. So my XP rig will be no good anyway :(

Especially Xbox exclusive games that were originally developed to show case PC hardware that was beyond the capability of a 360.

God, am I getting tired of Microsoft monopolizing the entire market. I understand that it's good business practice, but the only reason they have to do it in the first place is because their console has a ~30% failure rate and they have to find a way to make them better than the competition without actually... ya know... fixing the console.

Disclaimer: no I'm not trolling the xbox fans, no I don't hate xbox. I think it's unforgivable for a console to have such a high failure rate, and for the company, years after the fact, to just shrug their shoulders and tell their customers to buy a new one when theirs breaks.

It's much more profitable to open it to all. I am sure PC users will be happy with news at least!

Because they dropped the game after few years. I'm having a hard time imaging them saying "oh, hey, we can resume the development after all!" after few years.

edit: Damn, wrong post quoted. Oh well, April Fools.

I think Microsoft want it as a xbox exclusive since piracy is a much more common on pc then on consoles. I'm not sure but that is what i think.

It feels as a backpack with a washing machine housed inside was taken off my shoulders.

It would have been a shame to know that Alan Wake's state of the art graphics and physics would only be available on weak five year old console hardware.

Even though my xbox hasn't broken yet, I'm inclined to agree with him here, there wasnt any reason not to bring it out on PC, especially given it started on the PC, so it's not like they would be doing extra work by doing a PC version now (give or take finishing stuffs etc), it just seems like profit mongering.

I don't really think Microsoft's chief concern is piracy. If Remedy's game get's pirated Remedy loses money, not Microsoft. What PROBABLY is the idea is that the game will have DLC that you have to buy from the live market place. Microsoft gets a cut from every sale that happens on the Xbox live market place, which is one of the main reasons they're pushing developers to create DLC and make games Xbox exclusive.

For instance, Valve was fighting with MS for years because they wanted to give 360 players free content for Team Fortress 2. Microsoft didn't want them to make it free because there was a potential profit to be made.

This is one of the things I hate about consoles and much prefer PC over. A console is essentially a dictatorship. It's ruled and controlled exclusively by one corporation who will dick you around in any possible way they can BECAUSE they can. It is the pinnacle of corporatism in our society. On the PC there is always another option. For instance, why are console games $60 dollars and PC games $50 dollars? Because if you make a game for a console there is a 10% licensing fee to do that. On the PC no such thing exists.

He can take his code and shove it up his output device.

If you develop a PC title for years, seeing fansites and PC magazines grow steady buzz for your game, you stay the course and release it for the PC, not simply shelf it because Microsoft gives you a fat check.

Treacherous swine.

Well fuck you, Sam Lake. I don't want it, leave it there.

I'll buy it when you go back in time and remove all that being a cock you guys did with the PC version.
I don't want my games being an afterthought- we end up with shit like the PC version of Saint's Row 2.

I've got M&B:Warband and Metro 2033 to buy.

That game surely looks interesting and I really hope they do a PC version eventually. I mean, I'm sure game developers have their reasons to release some of their amazing games for consoles only (I'm looking at you God of War) but some of us, PC users, need some love too. *puppy eyes*

Remedy you had your chance, and to quote Bobby Deniro "YOU BLEW IT!"
I've got plenty of other things to play. Keep your craptacular ports to yourself.

Sam Lake (to interviewer): Oh yeah. Alan Wake PC is still on my hard drive.
Dude: wait wait! What was the ID code of HD?
Sam Lake: 3479. why?
Dude: ... WE FORMATTED THAT DRIVE!
Sam Lake: ... :( .... lol!

I don't want it anymore though. It was supposed to be open world with dynamic day/night cycle. The day would be sandbox with full conversations with the townspeople and you would have to get supplies for the night... when the demons come...

Now it's a linear story.
