Hear hear.

Of course you can kiss your ass goodbye when you introduce the free soft drink idea to a bar.
Sadly true, but seeing as a pint of lemonade costs them about 18p; it's hardly a bad trade off.

Live in the USA, so drinking age is 21. That is bullshit personally, as you can buy cigarettes which imo are much worse at 18. Also if you are old enough to guy die in Iraq, you should be old enough to have a damn beer.
If your in the military you can drink at 18.
..As to avoid getting mentally disturbed when you have to shoot people again the next day?
Most likely to avoid the argument: "If he can die for his country why can't he drink?"

The bar I used to work for gave out free drinks for the drivers. Worked pretty well.
Bonus was the Taxi drivers gave discounts for bar pick-ups after 1.

I hate alcohol and what it does to people (Note: i don't drink). The last party i was at, a lot of people had too much to drink, and they ended up trashing a lot of the inside of the hosts house. He was livid, but i guess he should've kept the doors locked (The bulk of the party was outside). People were sprawled everywhere, throwing up on the carpet, the garden, anywhere. It was disgusting. Why do people do this to themselves? I talked with most of the drunks while they were sober and they were really nice people, i don't get why they need to drink so much.

Casual/social drinking is fine, but if you're drinking to get drunk then you're doing it for the wrong reasons. There's nothing to gain but everything to lose if you drink to get drunk.

I was actually aiming at why the drinking age is lower for soldiers than normal citizens.

And your bar is awesome, I have yet to walk into such a place.
All they do here is take your car keys when you had too much or stop serving you drinks.

Yea, I thinks it's weak too, 21 is a bit old to have a first beer, especially after driving for 5 years. My thoughts are that you should have experience with alcohol before you start driving.

You should visit the Bremslicht :)

I have never had to take away keys, but then again, it's hard to notice who's the driver if everybody is drinking. The good thing about this place is that public transport is fairly well structured.

Americans on the forum may be interested to know that several university presidents around the country are trying to lobby the government to lower the drinking age to 18 so that college students will have more knowledge about alcohol and be able to make better decisions when they actually get to college.

The age limit is 18 as of this year. Before that it was 16 for beer and 18 for everything else.

Yeah, oh yeah, you've seen me walk
On burning bridges.
Yeah, oh yeah, you seen me fall
In love with witches,
And you know my brain is held
Inside by stitches.
Yet you know I did survive
All of your lovely sieges,

And you know that I'll pick up
every time you call
Just to thank you one more time,
Alcohol.

I actually don't drink too often and I only got drunk once when I was 13.

Intoxicants will always be used in social situations where people want to break down some inhibitions under the excuse of being high or drunk. Alcohol, like marijuana, has its place in society for this reason, and while I don't oppose it, I exercise some self-control when it comes to drinking. Also, being drunk is no replacement for personality or courage.

Alcohol in small amounts is actually healthy for you - especially for the heart. There's nothing wrong with a little drink with meals or during social gatherings.

The abuse of alcohol starts when its innebriating effects are what is sought - when you drink to get drunk, or to get someone else drunk. When you use it a crutch to "decompress" from a stressful day, etc.

Ah, alcohol. My second favorite recreational drug. I was introduced to it when I was... oh I don't know. 15 I think. 16 maybe.

My views? Its useful as a social lubricant, and it can be nice in the evening when relaxing. I'm not a big fan of beer. Rum is the drink for me.

Me too...in fact I'm drinking right now.

But on a more serious note the only problem I have with alcohol is drunk drivers, look if you are going to drink that's cool whether your of age to do so, don't get behind the wheel.

Hmmm...

Here's my opinion on alcohol: it's a beverage with some funny properties. One shouldn't drink it because of its tendency to intoxicate; instead, they should drink it for the sake of enjoying it. I've known many people here at Uni who simply drink to get drunk, take drugs to get stoned, and that sort of thing. I view this as the completely wrong way of going about things- drink because it's tasty and fine, not only because it's an intoxicant.

Also, I think the legal drinking age in the US is bananas, and ought to be closer to something like Germany, where one can drink beer at 16. Well, maybe even earlier than that- if alcohol is always presented as a 'forbidden fruit' with such a high legal age and such, it'll cause problems... Like others have said, many people express their rebellion towards authority through drinking.

I am one of those people who likes to drink, I am now a year over the legal drinking age of 18 in Australia, however that didn't stop me buying and drinking when I was 16/17.
Given how stupid I see many of my highschool peers to be I can see why there is a strong arguament for having the drinking age at 18 rather than say, 16. However when most people turn 18 they are in their final, and only significant, year of highschool. At the same time we are given the right to vote, gamble, smoke and drive. I think it's stupid to have all at once, especially DRINKING and DRIVING.
I certianly couldn't live without my license and wouldn't want to without alchohol, so my logic says that the legal drinking/smoking/gambling age should be lowered to 16.

I would then go on to argue that anyone stupid enough to kill themselves by overdrinking/smoking is probably never going to grow up enough to handle it responsibly anyway (most of the pople I mentioned above who are morons are still morons, maybe even stupider).
