My thoughts on how aliens will look is heavily influenced by Hollywood and pop cultures portrayal of them.

Basically something like this:
I always find it odd how each alien portrayed in media are all practically indistinguishable from one another, as if genetics are deadlocked for their species.
I always thought the point was that to us they were indistinguishable, just like we are probably to them.
If they were identical because of mechanical or clothing, sure, but having one biological profile doesn't seems more odd to me. If aliens would lack unique appearences because of their own intervention, then I can't see many benefits it's only for cosmetics. If it's natural, then how would that occur?
Um

...

...

Magic?

"Life" as we define it is very contingent on specifics of our planet/solar system. So, alien life that we would recognize as alien life would probably be a lot like us or other life on this planet already.

Surely the only reasons they would share no difference in appearance is that they are either manufactured, or that there's some benefit from genetically altering themselves to this extent.

If they evolved to share a hive mind, or be telepathic, then it would make sense as they would identify with each other automatically by thought. But, aside from cloning themselves, I don't see much benefit evolutionary wise. So the chances of us finding a naturally evolved race that all look the same is probably pretty low.

It's extremely unlikely that we could see them. They might not even be made of matter.

I'm going off what examples are on Earth (I understand that is a terrible way to go if you are considering all the possibilities in the Universe, but humor me), and how there is no (at least to my knowledge) any species which communicates in a manner similar to telepathy.
That leaves the possibility of modifying themselves. Imagine what it would be like, to surrender your own individuality and have physical difference between you and everyone else, how would people react to that? To the same effect, I'll assume that whatever species this is has some degree of emotional responses, so would they not react in a similar way?

I'll stop posting now, I'm going into depths of a topic I know quite literally fuck-all about.

Uh...I'm going to go slightly OT and describe characteristics that they would have:
*contain mass
*contain energy
*need energy to function/live
*have a molecule-based blue print in their most basic organic (or inorganic) components
*would kick our asses (invasive species precedence anyone?)
*would be constrained to the same laws of physics we're familiar with (gravity, "time", movement in 3 dimensions, heat, pressurization, etc.)
*would kick our asses
