God, I just had to put this up

OT:They're probably like the Vogans. Also, if they are smart, why would they go to a planet like ours? We don't have much resources except low oil and water. If the aliens were from

1) Starship Troopers: We'd eventually all die unless we ENLIST! Eh hm...

2)Aliens Vs Predator: We already met them so... somewhere Weyland is building up!

3)Star Wars: At least our future slightly safer then the above

4)Star Trek: I don't know anything about Star Trek so I don't really know.

or most likely: They're either just like us or technologically superior. If the Big Bang theory is correct, and our evolutionary patterns are the same, we would be in the same path or! If they evolved faster, they'd be superior.

Thats roughly what I think.

Hostile or not? Please, first we have to find out whether they such concepts as 'hostility' or 'friendliness'.

People tend to be in favour of the peaceful aliens, but consider why any species would take the effort to travel the ridiculous distances of space. Thousands of lightyears. Even if you cheated the laws of physics and travelled faster than light, it would take some time and effort.

In other words, one of the few reasons to do that is when your home planet is so fucked up that there's simply no other change than to embark to some distant habitable planet... Somehow I get the feeling that you wouldn't just go "Whoops, so this planet is taken? No problem, we'll just find another one" after finding your destination already populated by a sentinent species.

Then again, they'd need to have more than a little advantage technologically or otherwise to take on an entire planet. Most likely they'd negotiate first.

Well if they are a sentient life form i would expect a combination of the three. I mean look at our race.
Not all of us are hostile, neutral or friendly. This goes as far as to affect other races, for example, some of us really hate cats and/or dogs.

Aliens have already landed here...look at Roswell, NM and Area 51? We most likely have alien technology if there is any but it's all being hidden away and secretly being used to control our brains.
No the goverment let loss some alien tech. The microwave for example wasn't discoverd intill after the crash. The internet, pssh the goverment kept that hidden for a good long while, in till one day the one the janitora in Area 51 stumbled apon it, he knew what it was because in order to be a custodian for area 51 you atleast need a mastersy computer technology.

I think the aliens will be... freaking alien!

We have enough trouble understanding each other, so a creature that grown and evolved in another part of the galaxy from a completely different start point following entirely different rules is going to break our puny little human minds.

Humans have a very bad habid of attacking things they can't understand (see gaming's many detractors), the odds are we'll be the hostile part of the equation. Which is fine, we got nukes.

what if they've got anti-matter?

i think they'll be neutral and come to earth all curios and then we'll kill them reverse engineer their stuff and make a claim they they started on us by blowing up some random hobos with alien weaponry, sparking an interstellar war, which will be good for the economy and end up with either killing an entire species or getting ourselves killed.

I'd like to think that any civilisation advanced enough to explore the cosmos for other species would be advanced enough to be peaceful. But look back at colonisation on Earth; with each country involved in colonising others, you had peaceful groups who wanted to study, and you had the imperialists who wanted to enslave/exterminate. Why would the interstellar equivalent be any different?

I don't think that the aliens [small](assuming that we eventually meet them)[/small] will be either friendly or hostile.
They'd be confused, like us, and think:

"What the fuck is that thing?"

An alien civilization that is advanced enough for first contact should be a species advanced enough to not blow you to oblivion.

Unless it's the Goa'uld of course
Alternatively. One that is advanced enough may wish to conquer you or to enslave you and make you do their bidding to maintain their advanced civilization.

..Oh wait that is the Goa'uld isn't it?

Well either way chances are that will happen or the civilization advanced enough to get to use would realise they shouldn't interfere with us until we're ready or won't both because they think we're beneath them. Like the Vulcans.

We're an incredibly self destructive species. I doubt they would make contact at all until we are advanced enough ourselves to stop killing one another. Think about it, if they contacted it would spark religious wars and all sorts all over the world in less time that it takes to boil some water for a cup of tea. We could even possibly end ourselves as a people though nuclear war. Because the aliens contacted one nation before another.

A lot of people will respond to this by thinking "No, it would bring us all together as a race." But the truth is that humans just aren't like that. So I guess until we get over religion and borders we won't be hearing anything from the aliens.

There's definitely enough systems that might have planets like earth with a distance from the star it orbits around like earth. The problem is that it would decades for even the most basic communications if it the data or traveling mass at the speed of light. Overall, something's out there with problems like us, but we're not meeting them any time soon. In order to get to another suitable planet (point b) like as depicted in Sci-Fi, the party who left earth (point a) would need FTL (faster than light) or the ability to bend space-time to shorten the distance.

Yeah aggresive lol, theyll prolly attack us either for our mineral wealth, or like Klatu to save the earth from us, or perhaps simply to assimilate us into their giant robotic collective. :D but aliens will always be aggresive

They'd probably land, take all our oil-I mean... granite, stamp on our heads for a bit and then tell us all it's for our own good that they stay around while they're own citizens want the soldiers to come back already and they have grown tired of their government going into a devoloping nation-planet in order to skirt the real issue, economic instability.

Either that or they'll just bum-rape us with increasingly larger objects.

I think most (if any) alien life form would be something we wouldn't recognize as life at all. Probably with intentions we never would understand. But IF they happened to be carbon based and vaguely humanoidish I think they most likely be after som resource that is otherwise hard to find/get. Like liquid water for examle, the kind you don't have to dig out of the ground. Hauling a decent sized flotilla across a cuple of thousand lightyears, they are gonna take what they come for, sentient beings or not.

But then again, I probably just watch too much 50s' and 60s' SF.
