So my friends brother wants to sell his Alienware Area 51 M9750.

I said I was intersted and asked about the price. He said 'what can you spend'.

Now I'm worried about 2 things, offering way too low and looking like a cheapskate, or offering way too high and being ripped off.
He's had it about 2 years, it's got standard spec I think. 2.4 Ghz, 4/8gb Ram.

Basically, what sort of price do you think I should be looking at? I was planning on offering £400 ($650). Is that in the right sort of area?

Any help much appreciated.

EDIT : Umm, here's a link of what I think it should be. http://www.trustedreviews.com/laptops/review/2007/06/29/Alienware-Area-51-m7950/p1

It's an alienware. he spent way more than its worth which means hes gonna want you to spend way more than its worth.

:/

True, but he's pretty cool, and he knows I'm kinda strapped for cash. I know he'll give me a good deal, but I just want to be in the right ball park so I don't insult him.

This.

Offer him five bucks for it and build a better computer yourself for half the price of what he paid. It's surprisingly easy actually.

The same goes for all deals of this nature. Find out how much it is "actually" worth (can't help you on that I'm afraid) on the open market, offer him a chunk below that and work your way up until you reach a price you're happy with.

This is just my problem, I can't find a guide price. The only prices I can find are brand new. I've been searching for half an hour now and still can't find a secondhand one.

It was about £1500 2/3 years ago as far as I can tell.

Yeah. Try £400. See what he says. Tech goes out of date fast, but it's still a good machine. Less if it's in bad condition.
