Okay then. Generally someone who "games" noncasually would be considered a nerd, although standards are changing now with consoles becoming a lot more popular in the mainstream entertainment industry, but knowing a lot about computers is most definitely not the case. Xbox live players game and I think their experience with computers could only extend to being able to post on dodgey forums about their "mad skillz" and the "n00bs / fags" that they "pwned".
that was a good point. some gamers just arent smart enough to be a nerd. All they really know is how to win in a certain game or two, and know nothing else about technology.

I have no fucking clue how to do anything on computers outside of paint.
I even had to pick up how to do bold, italics and the like by quoting you fellows and seeing how you did it.

And I'm probably not a nerd either, I find it hard to get excited by the specifications of whatever high end PC my friends have is.

I would say (and there are probably many exceptions) that gamers should really be a classification all by themselves, so you have nerds, and you have video gamers, similar in some aspects, but completely different in others.

Also I would consider myself too much of a nature enthusiast (No not like that) to be a nerd.
Unless it's nerdy to know what a Cuttlefish is.

Oh no, I don't hold it against someone when they say they like FF. I just don't fancy JRPGs, really. I understand it's personal taste.
Uh... now I have to think of something on topic. Er... I actually know a fair amount about computers for someone who has never taken a course I suppose. I know about overclocking and external drives and such. Trouble is I compare myself to the obsessed rather than the unwashed masses who don't know what CPU stands for.
No so much begrudging them for liking it, just lowering my expectations in them.

"...oh, you like crap then."

Yeah, that's right FF fanboys, I said it was crap. Lay it in me, I've heard it all before!

Ok, I'm not that bad, I just feel there's so much past FF or JRPG's in terms of gaming that so many people I know can't see.

The bane of my existence is gamers doing tech support within companies. Yes, I game. Yes, they know some little things (crazy Div X hacks and so forth to get things working). No, no gamer I have ever met should be permitted within the halls of IT. They are the proverbial user with a little knowledge. Enough to get themselves (and half a goddamned department) into trouble, but not to get them out.

I had one power cycle two of three redundant switches a couple weeks ago whilst they were in the middle of a firmware upgrade. Moments like that I could prove to the media that video games cause violence.

Of course, I don't consider myself a "gamer". The last time I played online was a game of tetris against my IRC buddies months ago (if not years).

I know a little C++, Assemble language and VB 2008. I studied UNIX and know my way around routing tables. With 4 units remaining in my college life, I'm still not confident about my skills.

Also, I've been a gamer for as long as I can remember.

Yeah, I tend to get put into the "He plays games, he must know heaps about computers," catagory alot. I know jack about computers. Hardware goes inside the PC, software is discs and stuff. And that's still techno babble to me.
I'm in the same boat. Advast me matey, rise the main sail make em walk the plank. Har Har.

I don't know much about computers but everyone thinks that because I play games I must be good with them. When I say "I can't help you with your problem" or "I don't know what that does" they look at me with puppy dog eyes that say "Why? Why wont you help me with my problem. why don't you love me anymore? Why would you betray me like this?". Cuts me up inside.

I still hold that if you're ever gonna get into programming, Pascal is the very best starting point. I myself started with BASIC (the old one, where you had to start each line with a number to denote order) then moved on to C++. I had little experience with VB, for a project, but my groupmate decided that he'll do the coding.

When we had to create a mini-compiler for Pascal, I researched (for Syntax and usage) in the web. Turns out it would enforce good programming practices that will stick to you. Here's the tutorial I used. [http://www.taoyue.com/tutorials/pascal/] It's great because it assumes that the reader has no prior programming experience.

I think nowadays there is a tiny distinction between gamers and nerds:

If you only play heavy media exposure games, that aren't too cereberal, people will call you a gamer.

If you play anything that hasn't got the same marketing budget as a summer special effects extravaganza, you're a nerd.

If you can actually fix a minor issue, like downloading a patch without being led by the hand, or correct a video driver option thats glitchy, you're a bodhisvatta of nerdom, descended from the right hand of Gary Gygax to lead the nerds, geeks, (and possibly dorks) to the promised land of natural 20s and zero-lag servers...

Contract Network Administration for a number of companies after working fulltime for years.

For the record (since programming has come up), I write Perl, Java, VB Script, HTML, SQL, javascript, and PHP from day to day, I can also code ASP, Lisp, Python, Bash, Pascal, COBOL, Batch, (Q)BASIC, C, C++, x86 ASM, C#, Ruby and a little whitespace when I put my mind to it. Among other things. After 5 or so languages the rest just fall into place.

Edit: Funnily enough I don't consider myself a nerd or a geek.

I consider myself a gamer, and I think I have enough computer knowledge to fix pretty much any problem I've ever come across (without reformatting, except once) including putting together my own computer from scratch.
I have a couple of friends who work as computer techs and they come to me if they have problems with either their builds or software issues. I go to them to get help on hardware issues.
But I don't think knowing makes you a geek. If fixing your own computer without doing anything else and having 0 social life, this is where geek comes in

I find it funny if you put your avatar in the context. "I'm not a geek or nerd" but your avatar says "YES YOU ARE!". On second thought, it should be "YES I AM". Ignore me, I'm mumbling.

Irony. It's like goldy, or silvery, but with iron.

And I consider myself more of a nerd because of my social preferences than because of my interest in computers, despite a lack of programming knowledge or any real technical ability therein.
