Hah! Called it! I so fucking called it!

Now I'm really glad I didn't bother with any of these sorts of games after Guitar Hero 3.

I guess the record companies wanted more extortionate cuts for each song license after the genre became popular, so we can't have repeat tracks unless you pony up some more cash.
Oh no, there's MUCHO money to be made in milking your existing fanbase even harder.

And they know that they'll pay.

Using a new "technical limitation" as an excuse was brilliant. It sidesteps all the legal issues, and forces the end-user to pay to download the same song, but s/he can't use it for anything else.

This article is misleading; as many have pointed out previous DLC and Rockband 1 and 2 imported tracks all work fine in RB3, you simply can't play the pro modes or keyboard with these tracks. They still work like they did in 1 and 2 however so you're losing nothing.

Ouch good thing i held off on the Rock Band series.

Now im torn between the RB3 and PowerGIG, a button based pro guitar or an actual Electric Guitar >.<
I would highly recommend you do some actual research before picking up Power Gig. Their "real guitar" is simply an extension of the same five lane gameplay with some very basic power chords thrown on top, and their "air drum" peripheral is easily the worst idea I've ever seen in a rhythm game. Even the button-based pro guitar for RB3 is much closer to playing the real thing, and it's actually cheaper than the Power Gig bundle (though not if you include the price of the RB3 game as well). If you want a real stringed guitar, you should look into the Squier Stratocaster that is being released in March. This is a real full sized electric guitar that can be used in an amp as well as in RB3's pro guitar mode. It's more expensive than Power Gig's bundle, but it's much better.

I...this is confusing. Does this mean none of the songs I have downloaded for Rock Band 2 won't work for Rock Band 3?
NO! No, it does not! All of your DLC from previous Rock Band games works with RB3! All of it! The whole "buying songs again" crap is only for songs that are getting upgraded "RB3 versions" with the new keyboard and vocal harmonies features, and possibly pro guitar if it warrants it. The number of existing songs that will have this happen is going to be extremely small, and you absolutely do not have to buy the upgraded versions if you don't want to! The existing versions still work the exact same way they did before!

Sorry to get all stylized on you, but Jesus titty-fucking Christ, this article is seriously misleading and wrong! Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong! The wrongness...it hurts my BRAIN!

EDIT: I just read the Joystiq article that spawned this one, too. The Joystiq one is only talking about the fact that post-RB3 DLC only works with RB3, which was announced months ago at E3. So somehow, the people at this site I consider far superior to other game sites on any other day of the week, decided to add new information to their post that is completely factually wrong and cause misinformation and confusion amongst potential customers. Well done, lads.

So what you're telling me is that a company that releases the same game every year is trying to milk even more money out of people? No way, I cannot believe such a thing to be true.

I'm not sure what you call adding an entirely new instrument and creating a mode for existing instruments that can actually teach you real-life skills, but I wouldn't describe that as "the same" anything. You can bash the rhythm game genre all you want, but you can't deny that RB is the only series that's actually trying to innovate anything.

Even this isn't the most annoying thing about Rock Band 3-the method set out for importing your songs from Rock Band 1 and 2 JUT DOESN'T WORK AT ALL! You need to enter a 25 digit code, not including dashes, into a space that's only about 12 spaces long. If they don't fix this I'm just not going to buy the next one.
