As the title suggests this thread is about Jazz. Jazz is a unique beast in the land of music, with it's complex rhythm structures and insane tangents, it is truly one of the most diverse genres of music out there. It leaves much in the way for improvisation and innovation, and it even developed a sub-culture during is popular years. It has spawned numerous sub-genres since it's conception around 1915 in Chicago. Be-bop, big band, fusion, latin and funk are but some of it's musical mutations.

It is interesting in that, it rarely has vocals (at least normal Jazz) but to me at least, it has as much of an effect as music with lyrics would have. Some call it music for the soul. But I would be more inclined to say "soul" music is for the soul.

But whatever, just post one or some of your favourite Jazz artists and tunes.

Here is one of mine

I really like jazz, but strangely enough, I don't actively pursue it (buy albums etc), and I don't know any bands. Weird now that I think about it.

I usually just steal whatever my dad has in his collection and rip it to my computer. He has an absurd amount of albums.

Respect to you for making this thread!

Anyway, I love me some Jaco Pastorius - My favourite bassist, and a fantastic composer

Then of course there is the group he was in: Weather Report

I love me some John Coltrane too

There is plenty of others, but I'll leave it at that for now.
Oh awesome, Jaco is incredible. I've got a couple of his albums and two of Weather Reports. Never really got into the latter though. Recently I have been listening to loads of Charles Mingus and I love it.

I am surprised not many are too interested in Jazz on here. Shame. Or maybe it's the way I word my threads...

I prefer the old kind of jazz, swing and dixieland. stuff with melody rather than sounding like random notes strung together.

I like me some jazz (but am in the same boat as the op where I don't really go looking for it), I wholly hope that we reach a point where guitars and drums are no longer cool and we see skateboard punks with trombones and tubas, also

FEAR THE RAW JAZZ POWER!

I rarely listen to Jazz at all, its not really my field of music, though, I give respect for the ones who listen to it.

To be honest I only like big band (and I am not sure that even qualifies as Jazz) as improv music with no beginning/middle/end somehow infuriates me.

Oh and as an ex-brass player that picture of Dizzy Gillespie makes my eyes water. I was taught that you should not puff your cheeks out...and in that pic you can see why.

Ah yes, I have quite a bit of Mingus' stuff, Better Get Hit In Yo' Soul has always been a favourite of mine

What are you thoughts on Herbie Hancock?

I personally love Head Hunters (album)

Nah I'm pretty sure there is some other Jazz lovers here...maybe. It is late, maybe that's why?
Herbie Hancock kind of started me off with my journey into jazz. Head hunters is a great album. I listened to Jazz-Funk for a good while before I began getting into more of the classic, be-bop and the likes. I saw him live. He was great but the majority of it was him and his band going off on mad tangents that I don't quite understand with my limited musical knowledge. I got a cheeseburger beforehand as well and it made me feel sick so I had to sit down for a while. Other than that it was a great gig. ^^
