All the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain TGS News

All the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain news from the 2014 Tokyo Game Show in one place.

[a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/metal%20gear%20solid%20v%20the%20phantom%20pain"]Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain[/a] had a major showing at the Tokyo Game Show over the past week. Hideo Kojima spent multiple days showing gameplay, cut-scenes, and the development side of the game. Oh, and there was a bit of a fashion show. Since there was so much content spread out over a number of days, we've collected some of the biggest news and fun stuff here.

Fans hoping for a release date announcement were disappointed that none of the presentations included an actual date. Still, Kojima did state the game is nearly complete and will release in 2015.

Quiet, a silent sniper and a character new to the franchise, has been a mystery so far. Where she comes and what role she plays has been hidden, but a cut-scene and [a href="http://youtu.be/1Qr7KtUSVrM"]20 minutes of gameplay[/a] footage revealed that she will have a bigger part to play than expected. She can accompany Snake into the battlefield and has superhuman abilities that allow her to move around the environment quickly and to locations Snake can't get to. From these positions, she can provide support as a sniper, particularly if Snake is discovered by enemies.

Kojima revealed that whether Quiet is able to accompany depends on her bond with Snake, and the strength of that bond will also determine what abilities she will utilize. He also reassured fans that bringing Quiet along is optional as well, and in fact it is possible to never meet her in the game.

Quiet isn't the only character to accompany Snake on missions. At some point in the game, Snake will come across a wolf cub which he can send back to the Mother Base using the Fulton system (more on it later). This wolf, named DD, grows up a bit and becomes a "buddy" like Quiet, a co-op, AI partner. DD also got [a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdGp47c2l3U"]a special showing[/a] at TGS.

The gameplay footage took place away from the Afghanistan we've seen in previous videos. This mission took place in the jungles of Africa, and a few new features were shown. Snake has an inflatable decoy version of himself that says things like "Kept you waiting, huh?" and "You're pretty good," recurring lines from the franchise. He's also able to use his prosthetic arm to stun enemies, and apparently that arm will have multiple functions and can be replaced.

We've seen Snake call in items and support before and he'll receive upgrades mid-mission as well, for instance a new sneaking suit. The Fulton system continues to be hilarious. For the uninformed, the idea is using balloons to launch equipment, people, and animals to be collected and taken to the Mother Base. Those animals include DD and even Snake's horse (turns out horseback riding doesn't work so well in the jungle).

The Fox Engine, created for Kojima Productions, allows for level designers to do a huge amount of work themselves, without turning to programmers. A demonstration revealed that [a href="http://youtu.be/qCs0xxUS5as"]designers use a level editor[/a] similar to [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/project%20spark"]Project Spark[/a] or [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/modnation%20racers"] ModNation Racers[/a].

The Metal Gear Solid V booth for the Tokyo Game Show was massive and included props like a jeep in the process of being Fultoned and a sheep floating in the air, hanging from a Fulton balloon. Kojima Productions created an interactive set up that would allow [a href="https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=776649349064439"]visitors to record themselves[/a] using the Phantom Cigar from the game with similar visual effects and music.

Just before TGS, Kojima [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/137399-Metal-Gear-Collection-2014-Teased-by-Hideo-Kojima-for-Tokyo-Game-Show"]tweeted an image[/a] that teased "The Metal Gear Collection 2014", and apparently it was pretty silly for us to think this might be another collection of Metal Gear games. Obviously, we should have known that the Collection is a clothing line. During the first event, Kojima revealed the shirts, jackets, and boots that will eventually be available for purchase. Also revealed was a model prosthetic arm and Snake's iDroid. Both are expected to be made available for purchase, but exactly how hasn't been planned yet.

There was a lot of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain this past week. Kojima might be concerned that there is [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/132709-Kojima-Worried-MGSV-The-Phantom-Pain-Too-Big-for-Players-to-Finish"]too much content[/a] for players, and there certainly does seem to be a lot of content to the game. Hopefully Kojima Productions will be able to commit to a release date sooner rather than later.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is expected to arrive in 2015 for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, XB360, and PC.

So the Fulton system is still around. Good. I love kidnapping men with balloons. Life is not complete until somebody is kidnapped with a balloon. And then you brainwash them in your prison. On your giant ocean base. And teach them to appreciate the value of cardboard boxes. And have them build friendship boxes. And box tanks. And surprisingly destructive human catapults. And you kill dinosaurs together.

What I'm saying is that Peacewalker is the best game ever made, and the fact that they are carrying over many mechanics from that game can only mean good things.

I'll give one thing to this game, it LOOKS amazing.
Here's hoping it's ACTUAL in game, and not some Aliens crap!

Also:
Picture 6?
I laughed, don't know why, but I laughed.

To be fair, it'll probably look like the demo. Which looked and played amazing.

I am hyped anyhow.

I think my favourite moment was kidnapping someone that was apparently a leader, in that he was giving orders and communicating with HQ and all that. I get him, brainwash him and make best buds. I see his stats. He has a C or worse in everything, but, he is an A cook.

No wonder I won so easily if that is how promotion works.

Well the gameplay shown looks pretty nice so far, the only issue being that the environments (or at least that African jungle in the demo) look kind of generic and bland outside of a few setup areas that obviously look like they had some actual attention paid to them. That video with Quiet was kind of boring too, I'm assuming it requires the preceding scenes to set the context, but the overall scene with jumping out of the helicopter and then disappearing only to move 5 feet and get found by thermal sensors seemed kind of pointless and silly.

That said, the gameplay videos definitely look fun so far, the fulton system and the decoys are beautifully animated, and despite my reservations about Quiet's choice of clothing, pretty much everything involving her movement, with the cloaking and dust explosions as she leaps across the landscape, and the setups shown for her sniping abilities look fantastic. I'm still trying to figure out what the hell happened during the helicopter fight where Snake throws a grenade up into the air and Quiet shoots it into the helicopter where it explodes and blows up the helicopter. The inflatable balloon Snake decoys being able to knock enemies over if thrown near them is one of those bizarre touches that makes perfect sense in a Metal Gear game.

Overall, my biggest worry is that the open world design might make the environments kind of empty looking or bland, the jungle shown had some nice touches here and there, but a lot of areas just seemed like empty travel spots with nothing going on, even with a horse or vehicle to speed travel time, it will get old quick if I've got to ride open expanses of nothing for 10 minutes in order to get anywhere interesting.

They should give us an option to dress her up or something. I mean bikini top doesn't really go well with militaristic aesthetic of the whole game:p

The idea of having a wolf companion with an eye-patch seems swell, take that call of duty dogs :D

Silly me, hoping that the Metal Gear collection meant MGS3 and MGS4 might finally come to PC.

You have a pet wolf with an eye patch. I don't know about you guys but I think we have our GOTY 2015 right here.
Joking aside this does look legitimately quite good, and I'm happy to see some elements from the amazing Peace Walker being carried over.

Looking good, I just hope one of the ways you can bond with Quiet is by giving her a jacket to wear.

Man, this game just gets better and better the more I see of it. This better not be getting my hopes up only to fall flat.

considering he's a sniper speedy gonzalez who can change her skin from color to completely invisible, I don't think clothes are much of a priority =P
although I am intrigued by the possibilities that can be explored with her in combat, like that one part where snake throws a grenade and she shoots it into the helicopter

So let me get this straight:
For an AI companion in this game you can either have a Sniper or a Wolf...

Nope it stills means it's really a clothing line and that is the real reality of what MGC really is going to be.

OT: I wonder just how much the metallic arm is going to cost and if it does anything.

I just have to get this off my chest: Quiet reminds me of Gurren Laggan's Yoko Litner. If that's where Kojima got the idea from, he's being coy about it.
