(please don't be an ass just because I don't know much about PC gaming)
I recently got a Gametap account and they added Psychonauts so I downloaded
the game and it took 3 hours.
Then I got a virus alert so I deleted the virus but it deleted the game.
I re-downloaded it and I let the virus in so it started but it said I didn't
have Pixel Shader so I downloaded that and the game still wouldn't work.
(My Pc's not that good, it can't play games like Far Cry but it plays games
like Hitman without any slow down and yes I have 32 bit XP)
Do any of you know what I can do. (I'm not a rich man, is there anything free
I can do)

No that's not the problem GameTap has it free.

You could try getting it from a different site. It might be a problem specifically with GameTap.

Go to the start menu, click run, type in DXDIAG, and post the technical info here. You can choose to have DXDIAG save its results into a text file, just copy and paste that.

To be honest, its eiher a) Somehow you've got a virus, b) your anti-virus is screwing things up, or c) GameTap have some form of protection that's mucking up your PC.

It could be something else, of course, but I'd start by looking at b), then a), then c).

Psychonauts requires Pixel Shader 1.0 or later. Is your video card compatible with that?

if your computer does not have pixel 1.0... has the smithsonian come asking for it? that would have to be from ye olde clintonian era, if i'm not mistaken?

These abandonware sellers like gametap often have a pretty archaic download scheme... the game was meant to be installed via cd or disk... but you download it... so it can often behave a little funny.

Plus, antivirus software is one of the biggest Achilles heels of PC gaming. Turn it off, games downloaded from gametap will not be a petri dish.

My only advice is to go out and find a console copy of pschonauts. By now it should be realtivly cheap if you buy a used copy. Won't have to put up with viruses and the other hassles of computers and games. I know you say you're a poor man, but one game won't break the bank.

If you don't have a console, being the poor man you are, then I think you're SoL

I have a PS2 but the only place I can find it is in Gamestops in other states.

well, if you're not in a rush to play it you can always take a look at ebay, they should have it for cheap.

If you don't have the right Pixel Shader version then its probably because your graphics card is too old.

Psychonauts requires Pixel Shader 1.1, this is a really old version back from DirectX 8 (we're now on Pixel Shader 3.0 on new cards)

I would suggest posting the rest of your computer specs here. If you dont know them you can go to www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest and allow it to analyze your computer. Click on Psychonauts from the list, it will tell you your specs and what needs updating to be able to play the game.

See, if its just your graphics card, you could pick up an old PS 2.0 card like a Radeon 9800 for a very cheap price and it should be able to play Psychonauts fine. But if your whole computer is too low-range to play the game then you're kind of screwed because you'll need a whole new PC.

If you don't have the right Pixel Shader version then its probably because your graphics card is too old.

This seems quite likely if your PC can't run Far Cry, it sounds like you need an upgrade.

There are other options though. You could try and find a second hand copy for Xbox or PS2, or if you have a 360, it's available via Xbox Originals. In my experience with the game, it makes more sense with a control pad anyway.
