So I've put about 20 hours into this game, and I love it. In terms of allowing the player to make decisions, it is unmatched by any game by any developer (including you, Bioware). Unfortunately, the critics don't seem to agree. At best it's been getting average reveiws, so I thought I'd turn to the Escapists to see if I'm a freak or not. So, What did you guys think of Alpha Protocol?
i love it myself, the graphical glitches and bugs dont bother me one bit, its an extremely enjoyable game and ive beaten it twice in 1-1/2 weeks that i've had it, just got to the veteran campaign now.

I've heard people complaining how long it takes to hit anything. That's why you wait for the critical strike marker to focus fire and pop the top. Its nice to see a game where my silence pistol is incredibly powerful and is used more then my Assault rifle.
A lot of reviews I've read say the pistols are hideously underpowered.

THIS IS SO CONFUSING.

I might get it, but they've got to patch it first. The review on the PCG website virtually persuaded me anyway and countered any bad reviews.
Well if your just firing off shots like candy its useless. If you let the crit Markers line up you can plug someone in the head for a one hit kill.
'

this, the pistol when leveled is the best gun to get, i rape stealthing entire missions and the headshots with the chain shot is SO OVERPOWERED (but super awesome at the same time)

Review scores from mainstream game websites are directly proportionate to how much money the developer can afford to slip under the table. Obsidian aren't as well off as some.

I thought it was great, just finished it last night. Character customisation is good, although you really need to stick to the path you want to follow or it will become really hard.

I enjoyed the conversation system as well, they are all really well voiced and the multitude of different paths the game can take based on your split second decisions (the timed conversations was an inspired idea) makes you feel like your choices really make an impact on the story.

I can't wait to play through a second time with a different set of skills, was a stealth character first time round so this time will be a soldier type. And I'll make different conversation choices this time too, to see how they affect my later missions, eg what happens if I kill this person instead of sparing them?

I think it's just unfortunate that people have a preconceived idea about this game going into it (or without ever playing it, I'm looking at you people that commented on the ZP reveiw) just because Obsidian made it, they are not a bad dev. I'm prepared to bet that everyone who blasted this game will lap up FO: New Vegas when it come out, hypocrits, but I digress.

Yes there were a few bugs in it, but what game doesn't these days? And from what I've been seeing the worst ones have all been for the console version, I'm on PC and haven't had anything like what some are complaining about, maybe it's a bad port.

Overall I think it was fine. The game runs absolutely horrendously though and it looks pretty terrible, though after you play it for a few hours you see past it.

The suave dialogue really annoyed me. I want to act suave not like a complete prat.

To be honest, Yahtzee's review of it makes me want to buy it. If Yahtzee's review gets me interested, it must be a pretty intriguing game at the very least.

I think how much someone enjoys it is more in how they enjoy their games. If they're used to the usual run-n-gun we see in pretty much every shooter game these days, then obviously they're in for a big disappointment. If you enjoy rpg/shooter hybrids like System shock and deus ex, and are looking for a modern version of that, Alpha Protocol is right up your alley.

Also, I think the main issue with the reviews is the version people are playing. Console players seem to think it's mediocre to crap, whereas pc players don't see a lot of bugs (2 playthroughs and I barely saw any) and think it a worthy successor to Deus Ex (in my opinion, even more so than DE's ACTUAL successor :p )

Its awesome, I'm on my third playthrough. It was reviewed poorly, but so were lots of awesome games. Rent it for yourself and you'll see.

Is it pretty good. Because I've heard that the story is good and that's what makes a game very enjoyable for me. But I've heard that it also has some bad bugs in it. Are the bugs small enough to be overlooked or are they so annoying they just keep getting in the way? Because that will probably decide whether I buy the game or not.

The story element really makes me want to try it out, and people say that the rifle+soldier route is the best for making combat less frustrating.
