As keen to toot its horn in the aftermath of Grand Theft Auto 4 sales as Sony, Microsoft said game sales will boost the ranks of its paid online service.
The game sold a record 335,000 copies for the 360 in the UK on the first day, but North American sales data is still being parsed.
Xbox Product Management Director Aaron Greenberg told Reuters, "GTA is unique because it appeals to such a large audience. It will likely be the the best-selling game launched all year and we expect it will drive a lot of new members to Xbox Live."
While the service is usually dominated by first-person shooters like Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4, that could change, said IDC analyst Billy Pidgeon.
"This has the capabilities of being more popular online than Halo 3," he said.
"I think the console, even more so than the PC, has the potential to have lots of different types of games be popular online. GTA is an important piece of that. It can lead the way online for a large contingent of players who don't play first-person shooters."
