I'm a huge geek. I love sci-fi, fantasy, video games, ad&d and science.

I also love piercings, tattoos, punk, metal, sex, drugs and rock n roll.

So, I don't know if I'm coining the term, but I'm an alt-geek.

Who's with me?

I forsee alot of people agreeing. Virtually all the "geeks" I know are also big metalheads and dress in some alternative manner. A couple of years ago I could have been counted among the number I guess but now whilst I still love metal my general style is more "regular" than alternative. Maybe I should grow my hair back...

I've never played ad&d (if that's supposed to mean Dungeons and Dragons) and would like to cross out the piercings, tattoos, drugs and sex parts, but concerning the rest count me in!

Well, I'm all for the sci-fi, fantasy, video games and science part, but otherwise I'm pretty normal.

But of course, I'm a guy that loves dancing TOGETHER with girls, and not just next to them, and actually pays to learn this really hard stuff. I also sing really loud in my car.

When you think about it, normal is a very relative term...

Stereotypes don't work, no one is solely one type of person, everyone is different and has a mix of interests/hobbies.

It would be harder to find someone who is just a geek, than it would be to find someone who is a geek that is into something else as well.

Actually stereotypes work quite well. If I see someone who looks like me and share similar interest, chances are we will get along.

Hey, I know... I'm a strange, straaange person :D
Dunny, I just find it to be a somewhat disgusting procedure and I don't expect anyone to share this opinion, it's just my view.

I don't know what I would be. I'm a massive hiphop fan (not to be confused with mainstream pop-rap), always dress in bright colours and fresh sneakers. I'm not really into the whole sci-fi thing. I've never played D&D & have only seen the new Star Trek movie (which I quite liked) but most fantasy books/films, science, gaming and tech all appeal to me. Whenever something new comes out, be it an iPad or a slightly thinner TV, I'm first in line to pick it up.
I think what a geek/gamer etc. is has changed quite a lot. All my friends are into the same sort of stuff, but none of them are the dark, depressed, socially awkward metal-heads that people think of when video games, fantasy or sci-fi are mentioned.

ad&d is attention deranged and dorky. This person obviously likes to say stuff about them that probably isnt true

I'm more or less you "Standard geek", except, last time someone told me they had a problem with that, I proceed to ignore them to death causing them (or so they calmed) to throw a punch, only to discover that their fist was now broken. So, yeah, in short, geek that can win a fight.

But that isn't going to be all there is to them, they may look like a nerd, but they will have other things going for them as well. Never said geeks wouldn't look like geeks and get on with other geeks. Just they will have more depth to them than solely being a geek.

I feel like it's more that even if you're a super nerd; your nerdity isn't your sole defining trait. For example, I'm an absolute dork/nerd/geek what have you, but I'm also an English major, a longboarder, a dancer, a black male, etc. All of these additional cultural memberships tweak the geek archetype. At first encounter, most won't label me a geek until they hear me start talking about games, food, books, language, culture, etc. Then the resulting logorrhea lables me easily.

But, you've experienced it, no? Sorry, I'm having trouble grasping this. Disgusting in a good way? Thats understandable.

I'm sure at first glance half of the people I see on the street wouldn't even believe I was literate, let alone university educated. This wasn't intended as a thread about classification and group distinction. I was more interested in seeing who liked the the same shit I did.

Kinda what I thought when I first read it, but then I remembered reading a newspaper article about people similar to this guy. They're called asexuals. And whaddya know? The article is dated exactly one year ago.

Why must we put ourselves into little columns that define who we are?

Way easier just to say "Hi, I'm LunaticFringe, I have my own unique personality, likes and dislikes, and am an individual that defines himself by his means, not society's." Ok, it's not easier, but whatever you get my point.

Ironic considering what 'lunatic fringe' means in most social sciences.
I fully agree with this guy right here.

Sex isn't true alternative anymore. It sold out when it signed the contract with 'Breeding'.

Less flippantly, labeling is generally a bad thing, try not to encourage it. I know several dozen people who seem to be into the same thing as you though. In fact, the vast majority of metal fans I know are at-least 70% geek.

I was never a fan of drugs after my "friend" who was an addict robbed my house.
