We've all played it-- that one game that seems fairly simple and straightforward through your initial playthrough; but as time goes by and you begin to look back, you notice that plot points just don't match up, or they all point to an alternate version of the story. While these usually aren't what the developer intended to portray, they're fun all the same. So, in a nutshell: have you ever interpereted the plot of a game in a way contrary to the actual story? Which game was it? Also, for bonus discussion's sake, what are your opinions on this phenomenon in general? It is a sign of good storytelling? Bad writing?

THE ENTIRE THING WAS A FEVER DREAM.
Near the beginning of the game, Eddy Riggs suffers a terminal injury. We see that as a fact-- there is no doubt about it: that man is dead. Presumably, the events of the game take place during a hallucination conjured up in his dying moments, as can be evidenced by several things: First of all, the fact that the world is built almost entirely out of classic heavy metal. Eddy, being characterized as a man trapped in a present outside his own time, would naturally conjure up such images, given his fascination with classical metal music. Also backing this theory up is the way various characters and ideals from his regular life keep seping in to the metal world: the way Glam and Emo metal, which Eddy openly loathes, are portrayed as evil; the way general Lyonwhite is modeled after the lead singer from Kabbage Boy (the band from the opening cinematic); the way Ozzy Osbourne and Rob Halford, both of whom Eddy naturally idolizes, are given such crucial roles in his adventure; and least subtle of all, the way the roadies are identical to his co-worker from back in the real world (to say nothing of the fact that two unusually attractive and young women are attracted to a lecherous forty-something man who looks like Jack Black).

The final nail in the coffin is the way he handles The Seperator after acquiring it; keep in mind he's never even touched an axe before.

There you have it.
