close. trying to compile a list of the top best 50 ALT bands for my friend.

I thought that we were going to discuss legends and myths, like Robin Hood or Beowulf, except the alternative ones (as in the lesser known ones).
Too bad...

my favourite alternate legend is when Achilles goes to war on roller skates instead of in a chariot.

Aww man. Here I was hoping for something awesome like different takes on classic myths. Instead its a boring "name your top X bands" thread.
Iz a sad bunny nao. ;.;
This is exactly what i thought... i was hoping for something like how the Kraken felt or what was the hydra thinking before herc took his heads off.

In the meantime

"Alternative" to what? All those bands are pretty mainstream and on major labels, not sure that any of them are "alternative" in a musical OR business sense.

Go around in the city, ask 10-15 people if they've heard of these bands. If any of them have, odds are pretty big that they're not alternative.

Green day has a bloody rock band game, how's that alternative?

"U2 have released 12 studio albums and are among the most critically and commercially successful groups in popular music. They have won 22 Grammy Awards, more than any other band, and they have sold more than 150 million records."

Once a band or genre is critically and commercially successful I'd say it ceases to be alternative.

I've always thought the phrase alternative was a bit vague and daft for music groups. Technically everything is an alternative to everything else, people should stick to real genres. Avoid pointless confusion.

I agree with this, U2 is about as mainstream as you can get

I disagree.

Despite their success I'd still consider bands like Smashing Pumpkins and Placebo alternative. Its the same as Indie music, it used to describe bands that were unknown and underground and stuff but now its a certain sound.

Although I do agree with your comments about Green Day and U2.. Not that I'd call them Alternative bands in the first place..

I will ignore your request for music and say my favorite legend would be those of a Digouter's Adventure Story in Halcyon Days.
