I'd be more annoyed that the university was trying to guilt-trip me like that. You should let whoever forced you to go know that you're aware of that game, and you don't want to play. You're not paying your professor's salary for him to use you as a means by which to soapbox about his pet causes.

Most people really don't care, but that doesn't make you not a douchebag. It IS possible to come out of one of those classes thinking "god damn that sucks...I feel empathy for my fellow man" but still not give all your possessions to the poor and surrender yourself to a monastic lifestyle. Personally, I think the things happening to those people are horrific, but there's nothing I can do about it (yet) so I go on trying to be a good person here.

The more and more I read about stuff like this, the more humanity as a speicies reminds me of rats on a sinking ship; just climbing over one another to get in a better situation and not really caring about those underneath.

I don't 'care' I think it sucks for them, I am glad some organizations help the starving kids, but other than that I don't care. If you can't do anything and put it out of mind, then no your not heartless. If you could do something, but just didn't then you probably are a d-bag.

Someone told my uncle once, when he didn't finish a meal and threw it away. "You know there are starving kids in africa" To which he replied. "What the fuck do you want me to do? Mail them my leftovers?"

No. simple as that. The fact that you don't honestly care about starving children around the world means you're obviously more concerned about the things that are wrong on your HOME SOIL than over there. Frankly I could care less if children are starving in the middle east if we can't even afford to feed our people HERE. If we can't keep ourselves in check, why the HELL should we be trying to help other nations . . .

The problem is that these people have live for many many generations without foreign influences the fact that we first decide to help foreign people instead of our own backyard until we fix our own problems. why do we make other people equal to our standards just because they don't live the same way we do.we cant help others until we help ourselves.

Well there's a difference between not caring and not helping. Personally, I care, even if I can't really offer my help. It sucks that people are in situations like that, and it's much, much worse when you consider the amount of sex slavery and such going on in those situations. I don't understand how you could just not give a crap about that. Though I suppose the predominant worldview now is that we're all just animals with random, pointless origins, and we may as well only care about our own well-being and enjoyment because human life has no value anyway.

And maybe you're sitting at your keyboard thinking about the Earth's desperate need to stop the cruel product testing on animals destroying the ozone, but probably, you aren't.

All life is utterly meaningless and leads to the same end, death. So, enjoy your life while you are here. Raise some hell, get in some fights, but don't worry about people who are just as worthless as you.

No. I'll believe that. Thats why I think we should not have any form of government to begin with. Cause I think that we really should care about ourselves. Also we are just nothing more than animals who have evolved.

Not exactly. It's the sad truth that no one chooses the life they're born into, unfortunatly some just draw the short straw. You shouldn't feel bad that you didn't.
