The people who talk down about hipsters (like me) are pretty much those from the fringes of society. The nerds, geeks, outcasts, intellectuals, etc... such people are what they are due to not liking, or fitting in with the mainstream, never mind worrying about trying to embody the culture of the moment.

The big thing here is that if you've got friends, and are happy, why do you care what the fringe thinks?
I guess its because I've always thought that if I was any sort of stereotype, I was a nerd. When I talk to the majority of my girlfriends about gaming they dont really give a crap. I've always loved gaming since I was little, and got into comic books when I was a teenager. I am totally addicted to RPGs and FPSs and i do crappy fan art and all that nerdy shit.
If I've come across as the type of person who thinks that theyre awesome, it was totally unintentional.
He spoke that like a true hipster stereotype. I don't have a problem with hipsters, just the ones who are pretentious assholes. Then again, I hate all pretentious assholes. There are plenty in the "fringe groups" with which I am grouped who are assholes. If you're a decent person, I will get along with you. (My earlier post was merely a joke. I would never shoot an asshole because they aren't worth the cost of the ammo to do so.)

Don't worry so much about your labels. Just worry about you. The labels people put on each other are meaningless if I am anything to go by. I dare you to find only a single label to put me under.

Pfft... haha, no. You're definitely not a hipster.

They'd never support something that mainstream.
(Save for select incidents involving Starbucks and Apple Computers)

The fact this is getting genuine replies .hurts Me. Is Hipster going to be the next diluted stereotype that you feel "part of" ?

There is no such thing as a "Hipster" liking surreal films ironically and not giving a shit (once again: Ironically) isn't called Hipster it's called being a Dick. I strongly suggest you either rename this thread "Am I a Dick?" or hopefully accept that Hipster isn't a rising subculture and that anyone calling you a Hipster probably heard it in an article but cannot pinpoint what a Hipster actually is.

This isn't nearly as bad as Emo which now seems to have fizzled out as quickly as it came.

I am a skinny white girl, early 20s. I have visable 'old school' tattoos, I wear 'geeky' glasses, I love comics and retro gaming, and modern gaming aswell in fact, I'm into art and photography, and vintage clothes mainly from charity stores, and my music taste is pretty obscure if I'm honest. And I shop at Urban Outfitters and American Apparell too :/
While you do share some similarities with the stereotype, there's one deciding factor. Do you hate things not because they are bad, but because they are popular? And if you do, do you make sure that everyone knows about it?

Hipsters are basically competitive hippies. I say that in the sense that both of the groups seek to act in a way that rejects social norms, but unlike hippies (who do it for its own sake), hipsters compete to see who can undercut the norms the most and end up turning into complete dicks. Worst of all, they usually go full-circle into using what's "hot" again.

EDIT: Now that I look back on this, it's a stupid question to ask. Rather, it's a question without an answer. After all, a hipster won't think that it does this in the same way that the insane don't consider themselves insane, just misunderstood. So even if you say "No, I don't act that way." it's not a deciding factor.

One thing you forgot to mention is the pretentiousness. Are you pretentious? If so then yes.

I used to be scared I was a hipster but then realized I'm not cool enough. I do have many hipster tendencies however like being an artist and an indie musician.

Yes, yes you are. But you seem to be a good hipster because you're humble and not a pretentious asswipe.

Fine, fine fine I'll enter Toyota Care. Also, isn't this system easily abused if it's Toyota Care every other time?

I've been hearing this word quite alot online recently, I've noticed people seem to fucking hate hipsters. And I'm now a little frightend I may actually be the target of all this hatred.
Just to get things straight, I'm from the UK, we don't really have the term hipster here (to my knowledge anyway), so I dont have much info on them, so I urbandictionary'ed it.

The only box I didn't tick is that I'm not from a major American city. Does that mean I'm okay? Do you have to be American to be a dreaded hipster? Or do I just need to learn to accept that people hate me? Will people throw things at me in the States?
Srsly though, I'm worried.
Don't stress. After half a dozen threads on this topic, no-one on this forum has been able to give me a solid definition of "hipster" that stands up to any actual scrutiny, so my conclusion is that what "hipster" really means is "someone I've decided to hate for some arbitrary superficial reason in order to hide my personal insecurities". If anyone gives you any shit take it as a compliment, they're probably overweight, sitting at their computers picking the crusties out of their asscrack and wishing they had a social life.

It sounds like a college kid's word for "poser" and I thought we moved on from that sort of crap after middle-school/freshman year of high school. Like what you like, do what you do, haters gonna hate.

Do you hate most mainstream things and walk around with a pretentious asshole-ish attitude?

If yes, then you're a hipster.

If no, then you're not.
You just described most of this website there.
