Seriously I have been waiting for info, topics and maybe even an early review (a la Portal 2) about the Thor videogame.

No one? Wow. I have been to the site numerous times and every time I see what little there is to see about it I get even more excited. First just finding out that SEGA was making it was great news. I mean if it were Catherine we'd have to be handing out tissues by now. (take that however you like, it's fun!)

So let me know what you escapists think. Here is what little I know about the game.

1) It releases tomorrow here in the States.
2) Some of the bosses look HUGE, like Castlevania: Lords of Shadows 1st boss HUGE.
3) You will get to throw Mjolnir. (Something I thought was missing from Marvel vs. Capcom 3)
4) There is an experience/growth mechanic.
5) Actors from the movie will be doing the voice acting for Thor and Loki
6) The game is NOT a movie adaptation.
7) In my opinion it looks freaking brilliant

So your thoughts? Surely I'm not the only one excited about this release?

Ya know . . . I may give it a shot.

I always thought Thor was one of Marvels better, yet kinda ignored, heroes

. . . Now if we could just get an all 2099 Universe Marvel game.

Woah. I wonder what that would be like. Other than some glimpses at their future thanks to Kang the Conqueror and Apocalypse, I've never really seen the future of Marvel. Are there stories from the Marvel Universe for all the characters for 2099? I thought that was just Spider-Man but other than through a friend of mine, I don't really keep up on comics. I have just seen the future Spider-Man from the Shattered Dimensions game (who is pretty great!) and I know about the new 2099 Spidey game they featured in Game Informer.

I agree with you I think Thor has always been one of Marvel's better heroes that hasn't really gotten his due but that is apparently changing, hence my excitement for the new game/movie! I've just picked it up and I'll be writing some first impressions (PLEASE do not mistake that for a review, as I am NOT a critic in any sense) later!

One other cool bit of info I found out for comic fans is that the game is written by someone who has actually done a run on the comic!

Brilliant avatar by the way, I would steal it if I weren't even more excited about the Captain America game coming up. (Also by SEGA!) Too bad Green Lantern didn't get SEGA but from what I've heard so far from Mortal Combat fans Warner Brothers must take liscenses (even ones that they don't own) very seriously so I have high hopes for that as well.

To Asguard! Translation: Hey you gimmie that magic space hammer!

Might not be a straight adaptation (though I'm sure most people will assume so, including myself) but it's coming out the same week as the movie releases in theaters. It's a definitely a cash-in game, which means it will at the very least be rushed.

Speaking with no facts and only going off the one commercial I've seen for it and the timing with the release and the movie.

Edit: additional thought. Another bad sign: Game is being released on all 3 consoles and the DS

Not for every character. Spidey, Ghost Rider and a few others had 2099 incarnations. They should try to bring more of them into the mix though.

Oh, and thanks for the avatar compliment.

Second this, I'm very wary of any movie tie-in games. Especially when they are release before the movie, that makes it seem like a marketing strategy to hype up the movie and grab some extra cash. There are exceptions, but that is the general trend.

I'm wary of movie tie ins they are usually just churned out shovelware.

I'm gonna wait to see what it's like first. Kind of like the film though.

It's alright...Loki was cute. And yeah stuff explodes so that's good. It's not like amazing or anything but it's good fun and the Iron Man tie ins are kinda cool.

I think you will be happy if you do!

I have only played maybe the first couple of hours (and am currently happily stuck on the first boss) and it's only my opinion, but I am very happy with this game so far.

First the not so great stuff. I don't know about any of you but I love me a good instruction manual. For one there is usually something (and sometimes lots of somethings) in the manual that is NOT in the tutorials so I always gain some kind of edge when I read them and nothing to me is greater than returning home, new game in hand, to sit down with a good manual and a chilled bottle of Coca Cola 2011. (Busy. Yet never precocious.) Thor's manual is, I kid thee not, 1 page. Well one page and instructions to go to http://dl.sega.com/manuals/X360/Thor for the real one. If you try to go to this page your browser will say that it can reach the site but doesn't have permission to view the page. *sigh* Why SEGA, why?

Now for the good stuff. There are robust options for the game including an inverted Y axis for the camera (thank Odin) and even a choice right of the bat to have a helmeted or non wing-head Thor as well as other costume options as the game progresses and you can even choose the color of lighting (for the more discriminating Deitys I suppose) multiple control schemes are also available and the usual sound, brightness, and subtitles stuff.

The controls are simple, yet rich. As I hoped you can throw Mjolnir to your hearts content, what was beyond my simple hopes is that even from the first level you can quick throw it in the direction you are facing or you can press in on the right stick and target far away foes to recieve some ranged Uru justice. Lovin' it. (Then again I usually play a ranger whenever I get a chance.) The left trigger blocks as Thor spins Mjolnir, The left bumper does a quick dash Darksiders style (So Thor and Ares hang. Who knew?) and again even on the first level you can do this dash (and you will. A lot.) in midair. The right trigger is well used for the quick hammer chuck. Right bumper is used once you fill a bar Ultimate Alliance style that literally unleases holy heck on the entire screen. The first time I used it I was being attacked by like eight enemies and eight columns of asgardian get bent came streaking from the sky. I almost dropped the controller. So yep. I like the right bumper.

Left stick of course is move and right stick is camera control which so far is great. Again pushing in on the right stick enables Mjolnir target mode which I love, the X button is your standard free melee attack, the Y button is a more powerful attack whick requires Odinpower that is represented as a blue bar opposite your health. (the hud by the way is fittingly minimal and represented in a connected cirle at the top left of the screen, well done there.) B is used to grapple, after which when fighting a regular enemy you have the choice to use X to melee them (and regain health) B to just crush them in a hold (which gives you Odinpower) or Y (my fave) to use a power move on them and gain Valor. B also interacts with objects such as runes that you can drain Health and Odin Power from Half Life 2 style. (In other words it gives you as much as you need so far, and you can leave some to come back to it seems.) A Jumps.

The game itself is beautiful. You begin in Asgard and it's literally breathtaking at least to me. Thor looks amazing, he looks more like the Ultimate version than the classic version that I prefer but I don't really care. The voice work is also excellent as the game starts there is a voice over that I assumed was Thor, it wasn't it was Loki. Both actors have done an outstanding job. I really like the presentation. That's subjective though so what you think of the looks and sounds is really up to you. I love em'.

I'm going to post this now so it doesn't time out and then I'll continue in a sec.

Can't think too many people get too excited with movie tie in's, and although it isn't actually following the plot, most people will associate it with it, especially if you have close multi media release dates.
A lot of games that do this tend to throw up on themselves or wet the bed, as in humiliate themselves.

Sorry about the double post but even though I enjoy keyboarding I don't really want to go for wall of text x 2.

To continue I would be remiss not to mention that for as good as I at least think it is Thor is a $50 game, not a $60 one. So that was a plus for me as well as I expected to pay full AAA game price.

A word about the Valor system. As I mentioned before you can gain valor by defeating enemies with Y that you have grappled with B. You can also get it from these cool little mini games you play which are reminiscent to me of the minigame in Batman Arkham Asylum where you were trying to overload security locks. There may be other ways to get more as well, like I said this is a first impression. It is used to unlock powers, moves, and increase attributes in the Valor power up screen accesible with the select button. There are (so far) 30 different upgrades in 6 seperate categories. Melee, General, Hammer Throw (YEEEESSS!!!! *ahem*), Lightning, Thunder, and Wind. Different elements have different effects on enemies such as thunder is usefull for breaking armor, which some enemies (and certainly this literally god forsaken boss) have. The Valor screen is set up like a wheel in a tiered system with some abilities only accessible after previous ones in the chain have been bought.

Thor's moves. Thor's attacks beyond standard melee remind me of the system used in many other games such as Bayonetta or Devil May Cry. You get a burly assortment to begin with and then can add more via the Valor uprades. There is quite a variety.

Enemies. So far the enemies have come in a few flavors but mostly the type that a good melee combo will fell, then there are bigger boys that demand you rip their armor off first, then there is the boss who apparently had no respect for a God. (seriously I think he was designed by Christopher Hitchens or something....) He's eight times Thor's size and yes you have to beat the armor off of him, stagger him and then....!!....Grapple him! No kidding you jump on him and then proceed to jump to vulnerable points where you can start doing real damage! This rocks! It's hard as heck for me but I'm having a blast! Every fight it feels like "no, no that was my bad, I can see where I screwed up." not "Darn. I didn't slam X fast enough." I love that in a game.

So what have I missed.....Oh right! Travel. Thor can jump between different points in the level by using Mjolnir, it can also be used as a double jump at times when there is a glowing indicatior basically like an attach point. Saving is done via auto save but there are also save points that refill your health and Odinpower when used and Thank all of the gods you can have more than one! Novel!! Sorry, I really don't get the Highlander save method many developers employ....

That's all I can think of for now, I will try to give a more in depth impression later, for now back to go get pounded on some more by Richard Dawkins pipe dream....

The Wolverine game was pretty good, might be along the same lines as that. Didn't even realize there'd be a game until now.
