"Lyra" sounds nice, I don't think there's really a lot of room for teasing there. Besides, as a Battletech fan it reminds me of the Lyran Commonwealth. Maes... I dunno. It's probably okay though. At least you're not going for one of those names like "Latisha" or any of that kind of crap.

It's fine. The other kids will make fun of them for something no matter what you do, so the least you can do is give them cool names.

DONT GIVE THEM UNUSUAL NAMES

Do you know how much other kids will insult them over it?

I'd much rather someone use unique names instead of butchering the spelling of a common name. The kind of parents that do that think they're so darn clever, when in reality it just comes off as impossibly smug. "My precious snowflake is too important to be associated with common things!"

No, but I probably am by smoking a lot of pot. Those names aren't odd at all these days. Everyone thinks they're original.

I'd rather be named after something obscure that no one knows thirty years from now than, say, what one of my former co-workers is named, Prince. "Well, at least we know what your parents were listening to, right?"

David Mitchell tells us all about baby names. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xblh12XgQ4o&feature=channel_video_title]

He does not feel that it is actually a useful thing to give your children unusual names, and wonders if you're actually being a teensy bit self-indulgent.

Those names are better than the "totally original" alternate spelling of boring names. I'm not even kidding when I'm saying that pretty much EVERYONE in my son's JK class had an "original" spelling in their name.

Owen -> Owenn
Cameron -> Camrynn

Stop itttt!

Probably not. Robin Williams named his daughter Zelda, so Maes isn't horrific by comparison.

I plan to name my son after Deathwing, so in class he can say, "My name is Neltharion and MY HATRED BURNS THROUGH THE CAVERNOUS DEEPS"
Ahh...but I am also not Robin Williams and do not have that magnificent beard to back up my madnesses
Damnit, man, you can try, can't you!

Also, I've always been a huge supporter of unorthodox names. I once met a guy named Constantine. He loved it and I loved it too. I'm almost positive his birth certificate came with a seal of badassitude.

My unfortunate nickname growing up was "stick boy", and my last name has "apple" in it. It really doesn't get any easier than having a fruit in your name. But I think it was a bit too easy. And I had a friend at summer camp whose nickname was Hoboken.

Edit: My brother joked he's name his kid Pine, so it would be Pine Apple-

They way I've always heard it is that they hate it when they're younger, but love it when they are adults.

Making fun of peoples name doesn't actually happen very often. I mean some names yeah but they are almost designed to be insulted. Who names there kid Paul Mywang....

EDIT: My Nickname was Oatmeal... I use it a lot now.

I'm a huge geek and I don't get the refrences. As for my children, I will be naming them Axle and Tracker.
I'm pretty sure it's from Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, adapted into the feature picture The Golden Compass. I don't think it's particularly strange.

Maes will probably invite a fair amount of confusion over pronunciation, whereas Lyra is rather straightforward.
I was thinking Fullmetal Alchemist...

Kids don't normally make fun of other kids because of names, they are much less creative than that.

Oh look; a wild pertinent video appears!

If I remember the video correctly, I agree.

As long as they sound like names. Id rather an interesting name than some common one. Ofcourse, if they are teased, talk to them and maybe let them choose their own name later on (though make sure the can think it through, so they don call themselves Spongebob and Dora)

Incidentally I actually liked the name Neltharion for a kid. Would end up being called Nelly though so... yeah.

So I guess it'll be either Saul or Roland. And Kara for a girl.

Yes, children with more unusual names tend to do worse in schools, have a lower self-esteem, and are teased much more often by classmates.

Also worthy of note: children with common names are boring as fuck.

Me? I have an okay name. It's Derek, so it's not so unusual that I get made fun of, and people can't make horrible puns out of it, so I like it.

Also, I find that as I grow older, I begin to like more unusual names more and more.

I think Maes is an awesome name.
