I'm 18 hours in and i felt i was doing pretty good. I just completed my stuff in freeside, i robbed the Silver Rush blind (and sold their inventory back to them) and i got a mountain of caps to aid me.

Then i see my brother playing and somehow he found some random guy in Nipton who was happy about winning a lottery (which i never found) he made someone else the sheriff of Primm and he seems to be getting (i don't know) MORE out of New Vegas than i am.

he's finding more quests, meeting more people, finding more weapons...

so am i doing it wrong? there's a lot of guys he's found that i can't find. a lot of guns and quests that he's encountered that i don't know where to look for them...

i almost feel i have to start my 18 hours all over again... i'm not doing it wrong, am i?

There isnt a "wrong" way, he clearly just looked in diffrent places to you and thus gets a diffrent game. Dont restart just look around a bit and you should find a good quest line or two.

You're just not talking to enough people I guess? Not much to do about it, its a big game and you will miss some quests.

There's no such thing as playing a game "wrong."
Given the nature of New Vegas, I'm not surprised that you two are having different experiences, though I am surprised to hear that you didn't encounter the guy in Nipton, as you pretty much have to encounter him on your way to Novac.
Knowing the game, though, it's probably just a matter of a trigger not occurring properly.
Whatever you do, though, don't restart!

The beauty of New Vegas: no two playthroughs will be the same. It is perfectly normal for that to happen.

Yeah, i at times felt the same way! Many times when i completed a mission, it said that i failed some other ones.. But this mostly due to crossing quest paths, though i still felt i was missing out on many things.

But the game was so bugged for me that i barely managed to finish it once, so many hard restarts you can barely believe it.. uughh..

You don't play a game wrong.
If you play a game wrong then you need to smack the developer and they should preform Seppuku, because you shouldn't play a game wrong.
You all have a different experience, that's the point of an open world game - your gameplay differs from the next guy because of your choices - I'm not talking about bullshit morality, but the choice to enter a saloon and talk to everyone, the choice to murder the inhabitants of a casino featuring a cannibalistic cult and not aid them, or the choice to ignore everything and hunt down animals.
Don't start over, continue to enjoy your experince.... Till the game freezes, or if you play it Yahtzee style, you have a brain seizure and you die, the last image in your mind etched in your vision, till you restart the game-eh, reincarnate.

It's a pretty open ended game, two people may progress through it in very different ways. Just keep going on your character, you'll get to Nipton eventually with the main plot (unless you might have ignored it and went straight onto Novac).

You really just have to talk to people and do quests.

haha, when I had a playtime of 76 hours...I had not done anything on the main quest, but now I can fast travel to every location, so the main quest is going to be pretty easy xD

He's probably just exploring more than you. Granted, I never got a whole lot out of NV. Just take the time to explore everything you come across and make sure to treck across most of the map. Just make sure you carry around plenty of ammo and rations if you're playing on Hardcore mode.

People complain about Cazadors, but I never had much trouble with them. Just criplle a wing and back away while shooting at it. If there's more than one, cripple their wings and back away taking shots at whichever one is closest. If you can, frenzy them.

I remember that the first time I played New Vegas, I snuck into Nipton by climbing some rocks at the back (I smelled a trap) and missed the Lottery guy as well. Doesn't really effect much, though, he was really just for forshadowing what would come in a second. You did talk to Vulpes Inculta in Nipton, I hope?

Fallout is, to me, a lot more open then other games in its genre and plays like a good RPG should. There is adventure under every little rock and the game is teeming with different things to do.

I'll agree with the other posts here and say that no, you aren't playing it WRONG, you're playing it different. However, from what you're describing, you want to have more immersion in the game world and that involves looking around and following your gut in quests as opposed to "doing all your stuff" and going off the radar.

Don't start over unless you really feel like you need a new character to start afresh on (I did, after more or less ruining the experience with my first character) as there is always more to do in New Vegas. Heck, I have over 80 hours chalked up and I'm still discovering and completing new quests.... Granted that may be thanks to DLC to a certain extent, but there's still 75+ hours there.

In short, try a different playstyle. Look for adventure, go exploring, take time to read the in-game lore and understand the NV universe. The fallout series is GREAT to pseudo-role-play in as opposed to, say, Oblivion. (still an excellent game that. If that doesn't give you the "more out of the game" experience that you're looking for, I don't know what will.

A lot of things require high speech skill.

Do you have a lot of points in it?

Fallout is a free roaming exploration game. If you just follow the main quest line you can complete the game within 10 hours and miss 90% of the game. Turn away from the main quest and just start exploring. Look at the compass and follow the arrow to a new location.

yeah. i talked to him, but since i have no love for the Legion (after just that first encounter and all the rumors) i decided i won't do any quests that support them whatsoever and i plan on using the archimedes weapon on their main base of operations.

The thing is, you shouldn't be "looking" for things to do, you should just wonder around and talk to as many people as possible. Just look at the map, pick a direction and head that way as far as you can go and see what you encounter on the way. If you do that you'll find quests and people that you never would have otherwise if you just went where the story tells you to go all the time, and that's really half the fun in the fallout games, and in open world games in general.

Haha...you can't participate in that lottery. Though it would be fun.

New Vegas is first an RPG and then a shooter (or...whacker, if you prefer melee like me). Going in with guns blazing everywhere will stop being fun after a while if that's your only approach. It just sounds like you're not talking to people. So read your journal, go through the quests on the Pip Boy, or just walk around and see what you find. Just shooting whatever you see will be less fun because the game's not a strong shooter. Give that shooting some context (like..."My family is being held hostage by slavers, please help") and then it will naturally feel better.

If you need quest help, check out the Fallout Wiki [http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Wiki].

Fixed.

In a game like fallout, there's no real wrong way to play.

But in other games, there might be a "wrong" way. Take Vanquish. You CAN play it like a typical TPS. But then it will suck. Or you can play it the way it was meant to be played (zipping around, pushing your suit's power to the limit), and it will be WAY more fun.

But really, as long as you're having fun, even if it's the "wrong" way, then it doesn't matter, because fun is what games are about.

I killed the lottery guy because i thought I'd get some caps. So many ways to play you'll never get bored
