Am I shallow?

Whenever I'm offered a fundamental choice like what class or profession to choose, I almost always go with functionality first. For instance, I prefer a druid in WoW not because I have any fondness for nature, but because I like being able to perform all the roles. Or again, I like being an enchanter not because I like the idea of bestowing magical properties on the mundane, but because I don't like to see things go to waste. The only area in gaming where I don't do this is usually moral choice systems.

I ask because, to me, one of the best parts of MMORPGs is that you really get to express what you like and, in a deeper sense, who you are, and share that all with people who are doing the same. And there's a felt soullessness when you choose the spiritually-focused monk not because you give a crap, but because she has the best mp regen and movement speed. What do you think?

Nothing wrong with that. It's a game, so you want the class with the best aspects for your suited game style.

i believe you may have just stated the exact opposite of being shallow, your thinking logically.

Choosing a class due to its effetivness and play style hardly falls into the catagory of shallow

Nah. It just means you pick based on survival. You think you would survive the best if you were a druid. That's not shallow, it's an aspect of your character. You're a realist and a practical person.

Shallow would be just picking what everyone else picked because it's cool.

That's not shallow at all. Shallow is choosing to wear ineffective armour because it's pretty.

Not shallow, logical. You try and get the most you can out of the game and what it offers you. Might not be the most fulfilling way to play but it is the smartest.

I'm jealous of your fondness for functionality - I tend to try something (like a class) even if its functionality doesn't appeal to me just because it's got a cool background or visual design or something (like the Druids in Diablo 2, animal head helmets are awesome.) (For the record, Druids in Diablo II are awesome)

Doesn't sound shallow to me but what do I know I always play the big tank class because I enjoy it.

Its a game, nothing you do in a game is shallow ... cuz whatever you're doing is for entertainment.

No you are not shallow, you just pick what you think is the most efficient and interesting class and professions.

Now, don't get me started on my brother, I'll never forgive him for what he did to my warrior.....

(For those of you interested, he sold my torso plate body piece for mail, simply because it gave off a bit more stamina, saying that it was better than I had because mine gave me spirit, not to mention because it "looked way cooler")
Meh WoW was obnoxious with their nerfing of Warriors so I just gave up on it. I enjoyed playing as a Chaos Chosen in Warhammer Online now that was fun and I am half-tempted to get another time card and reinstall because I had that much fun.

It's a computer RPG, it's not shallow. Doing that in a tabletop RPG might be, but even then it depends.

There is nothing wrong with going with all around classes, it is pretty smart idea to be decent in every situation and don't have the chance of be hard countered.
