...that black ops actually was taken serious?

In my narrowly-informed mind about the FPS genre I always took it for granted that Infinity ward makes the good Call of Duties, thus bringing in the fans and leaves it to Treyarch to make the mediocre rushed sequel in order to profit more from the sales of the infinity ward one.

But it appears that I was wrong, black ops got taken way more seriously, albeit with the expected criticism that comes with hyped up games.

So the question I was going to ask is, was Treyarch always this side-kick (think of Robin in his gay undies version) I imagined it to be or were the games they made actually popular (Not good, god they aren't good, but that's just me).

PS: I'm not implying that Infinity Ward made great games, just better ones, I am a bit anti-FPS so I just cut through the single players for an adrenaline rush, that's all I got from them, the Treyarch ones didn't even provide that.

I think Treyarch turned it around with World at War. Call of Duty 3 was not anything to write home about, but World at War was great. Then there's that whole Zombie thing that they came up with...

Don't even get me started on the zombie fad, if it can even be considered a fad, those only last until they are burned out, zombies have been burned out and beaten worse than a dead horse and the popularity of the zombie-mods only seems to rise...

Oh you must be joking.

OT: Of course it was taken seriously. If a game has online play and is part of a franchise like CoD, it will be taken seriously because the online play will be huge. Besides, I think everygame released with the intent to make money should be taken seriously. If money is being spent, there is no reason for it to not be good.

Wll my two favorite Call of Duties (the original and 4) were made by Infinity Ward, so I know they can do a good job. Never really like any of the Treyarch ones until Black Ops. I was pleasantly surprised.

Yeah but the movie industry for example has evolved past things like this, the consumers realize (most of the time) when the sequel is rushed cause of the success of the first part, with a new director and smaller budget, and these rushed sequels are rarely successful (I'm still facepalming at Paranormal Activity 2). The online part probably did play a huge role but did anything really improve? Graphics aren't really different, new sequel means back to square one on bug fixing (which I hear there are plenty of), but I guess the "average consumer" can't be fooled by logic.

I bought WaW just for the zombie mode. WW2 in general is boring so that was a major selling point to people like me. The whole zombie stroy line they've been building is amazing!

Anyway, i'm not too sure about what you are trying to say. Do you think it does not deserve to be taken seriously? And something about some game company being a side kick?
I'm not saying they don't deserve to be taken seriously, I myself don't take them seriously but that's just my thing, I was just surprised that this wasn't general consensus, because it sure seemed like it when CoD3 and 5 came out.

I'm not trying to insult Black Ops, I was just looking into something that was of interest to me.

That doesnt matter. Thats the Halo logic. Halo 3 didnt do anything except give a bit more plot. There was nothing really great about it, but we're supposed to view it as a huge thing. BUt the fact that its new, and that everyone will be playing online because its where everyone will be makes it worth buying. So whether it changes something is irrelevant.

Sure, this will die down soon i'm sure, but for now, Black Ops is the new kid on the block.

But, but...Nikoli! "Oh man, Nikoli is AWESOME!" He said so himself! And I really enjoy the story in the zombie mode.

Bear in mind that many of the people buying Black Ops would not distinguish between Infinity Ward and Treyarch.

fact is that with MW2, infinity ward showed that they were a bunch of arrogant bastards with entitlement issues.
They deserved what happened to them.
Fuck. Them.

Hell, they tried teasing the notion of a patch, then just released mappacks that were 40% old maps with not even a palette-swap at the price of 1/4 the game itself.

treyarch saw this as their time to show they can make a game that the call of duty fanbase can like, and as such opened up a dialogue with players, and made some changes according to the common gaping flaws in MW2, such as explosives, as well as creating an expirence that would be more inviting for new players.
And they did a damn good job, the makers of the fun W@W, cod3, and spiderman 2

You're asking if we should be surprised that they turned out a good game after getting it wrong a few times before now? I don't think we should necessarily be surprised. In getting it wrong they learned what doesn't work while still making enough money to learn from their mistakes. They were bound to get it right sooner or later. I think they always took their games seriously, they just weren't as good at it before.
