Grind? what is this grind you people speak of?

I can count on one hand the number of RPGs I EVER had to do any extensive leveling up or skill training (grinding). Not even Final Fantasy contained much grind as I was able to fight through the games by proceeding with the story and just killing things on the way without having the run in circles for hours to level up. Now when it came to skills that's a whole other story, but there are proper exploits for that as well.

But grinding to beat the game? HAH!! Final Fantasy games, or any decently made RPG for that matter, can be beaten with the proper strategy and equipment. Leveling plays a minimal part if you have the correct strategy at your disposal. Unfortunately not many people like to take this rout and simply put up with the chore of grinding for a few hours to be proper level to make the game easier.

If I do a little bit of leveling up at the beginning of the game before proceeding I'm pretty much set and only have to rely on my strategy and enjoy the challenge the game offers me. Fights become far more interesting than "select fight, win, rinse and repeat", when you don't try to level yourself to make the game easier. I pretty much stick to my rule of 5 or 10, which states that at the beginning of the game, get to level 5 or 10 (that's if your starting level is 1) before proceeding with the rest of the game.

anywho, just wondering if anyone else has this, or a similar, problem.
I don't run into this problem with the final boss of most of the FF games, but I do when I decide to take on the super extra bosses like the Weapons in FFVII or Ozma in FFIX. Damn, they's tough.

Wow, this is a very ban-happy thread. 2 probations and 2 suspensions in the first 15 replies. Way to go OP!

That's why it's easier to do it little by little throughout the game. I always find that I end up over leveling, so that I end up beating the pulp out of an enemy that's supposed to be ascended to godhood. For instance, in FF8, I killed Ultima Weapon with one attack: Lionheart.

You have to grind. Its the same problem I have with JRPGs. I never grind, so I never win.
surely you have this same problem with most WRPG's as well. I know for one that i had to grind in Oblivion and Fallout in order to advance and be able to do some area's. though i suppose i could have always just lowered the difficult settings (pfffffft).
Grinding in oblivion (for mages) has got to be one of the best grinds ever, make a spell which cast 1 fire damage on yourself or at close range and spam away, had full every branch of magic this way

Dragon age is fairly grind free, i didn't bother at all with my first character and the only boss i struggled with was gaxkang

I never finished X because the last boss was just crazy-strong.
No offense but are you shitting me? You couldn't lose, Lady Yunalesca was a ***** and Seymour on gagazet was a bit of a toughie but other than that the main story was easy.

On the other hand dark aeons, nemesis and penance were hard!.

Do FFX it's so easy it's almost laughable, after about 2 hours (if that) of grind using the don tonberry method (look it up).

Please, Square. Next time you make a Final Fantasy game, go back to making it like X.

Here here! Man, I love that game!

Couldn't you kill the last boss of X by using phoenix downs on it over and over? I'm pretty sure they'd hit for 9999 damage each time.

Yeah you have to grind. You don't have to (and, in fact, really can't) in XIII but I found that the least fun out of the series. There are usually a bunch of side quests that you can do at that point that should help.

Side Note: I totally understand why people got slammed for telling the OP to killl themselves because that's completely messed up but why are people getting banned for saying FF sucks? If that's their opinion is that not okay? Is it off topic? One person said don't play them and got slammed. Seems odd to me.

Sad part is that I normally can ignore the grind-tastic-ness of the FF series until the end, where I god dead because the last boss requires I go over lvl 70, no matter what strategy I base myself on.

....Ugh....just...ugh...by that point.

couple of things.
1.) wow a lot of people got in trouble on this thread
2.) To everybody saying that all RPG's=grind. is mass effect not an RPG? I don't ever recall grinding in that (lots of the planets you landed on had the same building over and over, but you didnt need to do all that stuff to finish the game)
3.) yea everybody has had these problems. I consider grind in the "i'm not playing this game again, grind fucking sucks" category.

It happens, you got to stick with it, but every time i start playing a FF game again, i always restart for some reason.

Okay, I've beaten all the main FFs made (So not dirge of cerberus, crisis core, anthology, etc) and I've rarely ever had the need to grind. I play straight through FF7 and even beat Ruby and Emrald with no grind, the only game I had to excessively grind in was FF13 and that's because that game is..eh... But I don't have this problem, whereas I had much need for grinding in FFTactics, but I loved that since it let me have the fun of hitting my own teammates with frog and berserk while the caster turned to stone....I'd come back a couple of hours later and noticed I'd gained about 30 lvs...Booya

Such as 10, the final boss section with the big sword guy (as to not spoil stuff) and the little spider-looking thing (same here)are laughably easy when using Rikku like I did, but Seymour, [big haired girl in zanarkand], and even Yojimbo were harder...Idk...I walked through that game like I walked through 8 and 9. As far as difficulty, play Mass Effect 2 on Insanity, and tell me you don't wish you could grind...lol

The only one I never beat was 12, didn't even get to the final boss because it was so mind-numbingly boring I kept falling asleep while I was playing it. With boss fights in FF I find that if you are having difficulties its normally because you need a change in strategy, i.e being more offensive than defensive in the final boss of FFXIII made it alot easier for me.
yeah, FFXIII screws you for playing defensive.. damn the doom counter(second fal-cie battle and edelions in particular) nyoro~!!!

I never really needed to gind in Final Fantasy, except for one or 2 bosses, so it was acceptable. grinding is generally a problem in RPGs, but the grinding i had to do in FF was always on the acceptable side.

I am sorry but in every RPG bar a few you have to do a bit of grinding like in nearly every FF game you should be around atleast lvl 50 with everyone you are using to bet the final boss that is with using items like Megalixier and Holy War and exploiting weaknesses and actually playing the FF game like it is supposed to be played with strategy.

Someone earlier mentioned in the thread to keep like 3 levels above what the game asks you to be.. and If you do about half an hour to an hour of grinding at the start, that's fairly easy to maintain..
That is fairly right amount of grinding. Everytime you get to a new area like complete new area get up about 2-5 levels depending on what you need or what and maybe do some for getting up skills/materia/draw magic/get spheres/get ap/etc.
