Hey Guys and Gals

I'm beginning to get increasingly interested in the Mass Effect series, I played the demos for both 1 and 2 and though they looked fun so I have decided to push ahead and buy the game after I graduate. What I wanted to know was what do people think is the best way to get them, is their any essential DLC or the like?

I'm not interested in getting 3 right now but would like the first two.

DLC isn't required, I love the ME universe and I've never gotten any DLC. ME1 and 2 are available on steam
Yeah I saw them there. Is it better to get them there than over Origin?

I haven't played them myself, but I hear ME1's DLC is nothing special. The bigger pieces of ME2 DLC are great. Liar of the Shadow Broker is the best, almost necessary IMO. Kasumi is good but she doesn't really stand out much. Overlord is pretty average up to the last scene, which is much better. Zaeed is a total badass and I would get him over Kasumi if you don't get him for free. The rest can be easily ignored (Edit: I haven't gotten around to Arrival yet), but the Normandy crash site is worth a watch in a lets play or something.

ME1 has one piece of DLC which there is basically no reason to get. ME2 has a bunch of them - Lair of the Shadow Broker is the one is most worth getting, it's got a lot of gameplay, it innovates away from the standard ME2 formula, brings back familiar characters, and is fun. Kasumi is number 2, it's also a lot of fun, you get a new squadmate, more interesting levels. Arrival comes in at number 3 - it's shorter, a bit less original, but it costs less, and it's still worth it. While Zaeed gives you a new character, it isn't all that interesting, and you don't necessarily do much with him, so it's a judgement call for whether you should get it. Project Overlord doesn't have a whole lot of impact on anything else, so get it if you want to be a completionist, otherwise you might as well just skip it.

The only DLC that is important (i. e. needed) is Arrival for Mass Effect 2 since it ties directly into 3's story.

Definitely pick up the first two, especially because they're fairly cheap nowadays. The DLC for ME1 isn't anything special(plus you'll have to jump through a TON of hoops if you happen to get ME1 on Steam :/), but the DLC from ME2 is pretty big. Lair of the Shadow Broker, Overlord, Kasumi, and Arrival are all not only fun and great for expanding your story, and they all have at least some part to play in ME3 if you did them.

If you buy them on Steam, you can still redeem Mass Effect 2 on Origin as well. This won't work with Mass Effect 1 though. But at least it should give you the choice of Steam/Origin with ME2.

It's also kind of the least important because it doesn't actually have any affect on the story, at least not that I know of. What happens in it is what'll happen anyway, so you might as well just read about it rather than play the incredibly straight forward mission.

I'd say if you decide to get the games and romance Liara, Lair of the Shadow Broker is a must, plus it has some of the games cooler moments including a flying car chase and a ton of fun little easter eggs.

If only for convenience and having all of them in one "location," I'd say get them on Origin.

depends, do you hate origin?

honestly it makes no difference, if you do end up getting mass effect 3 on origin, your save files can still be transferred. tbh i'd just go with whatever is cheapest.

and also, have fun! the games are fantastic. the only piece of advice i can give is get involved, do every side quest you find, and allow yourself to get sidetracked and easily distracted. i recently started a new shepard from scratch ready for ME3 so the choices were fresh in my mind, and i realised how much i missed in ME1.

also, your decisions matter, have a real hard think before you do anything.

If your'e buying on the PC, I suggest buying ME1 on Steam, and ME2 as a physical copy if you can find it. Saves will work fine.

For DLC, well ME1 on the PC comes with Bring Down the Sky for free, and that's really the only one you'll need. Other one you can ignore.

For ME2, if you buy it new you'll get the Cerberus Network thing with a bunch of free DLC. Apart from the free stuff, Shadow Broker and Arrival are the big story-based ones. Kasumi you can get if you really want to, but apart from those you can skip the rest.

I'd say none of the DLC for ME1 is essential, although Bring Down the Sky is fun if you've got some spare cash. For ME2, I'd say Lair of the Shadow Broker is pretty much essential (it's probably the best 2-3 hours of ME2 in all honesty), and Overlord, Arrival and Kasumi are all worth it.

For ME1, the Bring Down the Sky DLC is free, so there's really no excuse not to get it. The Pinnacle Station DLC isnt really worth it though.

For ME2 if you buy the game new you should get access to the Cerberus Network which has a whole bunch of DLC.. I'd also recommend getting Lair of the Shadow Broker and Arrival as they tie into the story pretty heavily.
Maybe get Kasumi and Overlord if you're desperate for more content. The other stuff isn't worth it imo.
