So the Amazon tablet is for real. It's going to be called the "Kindle Fire," and it can be yours for the insultingly dirt cheap price of $199, which is almost a third of the cost of the iPad 2. This makes it the the lowest priced tablet you can get that isn't a Chinese knock-off. From what I understand, it's a 7" slate running a highly modified version of Android (Gingerbread I believe) that is mainly intended to be used with Amazon's billions of services, like Kindle (duh), their streaming music/movie thing, their cloud storage, and their app store (no official Google app store, sorry).
So, could the Kindle Fire be the mythical 'iPad killer'? Could Apple shaking in their Vegan-leather, recycled slip-ons? Or will Apple just sip its caramel macchiato and laugh it off?
P.S. On a side note, there's a new touchscreen version of the Kindle called... get this: the Kindle Touch! It's going for 99 dollars with ads, and 140 without. There's also a new original kindle (that makes no sense) which is going for $79 (shipping today, I heard). So if you have just been waiting for the chance to buy a Kindle, now would be a good time.
