Heres what I think with my detective ability:

1. Since Zac Efron will be in it they are going to try to play off teenage girls, pre-teen boys, and the uniformed anime/manga fans. This will mean that to get the preteens into the theater, and also their teenage sisters so they can oggle Zac Efron they will get the rating as low as possible by cutting corners etc. They will cut out Ryuk because hes a "Scary Image" they will cut out the death montage because that will get them up to an R, a pg-13 if they keep it cleaner than a privite bathroom.

Disney Stars + Teenagers - Lower Ratings

2. They will make alot of plot changes. Any of the good Death Note fans have seen a clip/trailer/or the whole movie. So they will be trying to keep it the same but make if different...as expressed earlier. They have changed the names so they will try to Americanize it for the audience, which will screw up the plot a little bit.

Original Ip - Plot Screwups - Americanizing

3. IT IS ANIME. I saw Dragonball Evolution in theators, this will suck about the same. Hollywood can't do shit for anime. They never can, they probably never will.

Greedy Executives+ Misunderstanding the IP

4. Making characters PC, and friendly. They will ruin Light and make L seem like hes crusading for justice, not just doing this because hes bored and has nothing better to do.

/Controversy

So heres what it comes down too

(Disney Stars+ Teenagers - Lower Ratings +Original Ip - Plot Screwups - Americanizing + Greedy Executives + Misunderstanding the IP) /Controversy = A Shit Film, much like Dragonball Evoultion.

Excellent analysis. I believe you're predictions will come true for this movie. Fuck, its not even in production yet and it's screwed.

BTW, love the avatar.

I'm reminded of that South Park episode about Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull...

Basically you have to understand that Hollywood's out of ideas.
And then when someone gives Hollywood a new idea, they are required to put that idea through the "notes process", to give this new idea a familiar feel so the investors don't get scared and hide in the basement with all the money.
Then the filming begins, and right after filming begins, so does the "test audience" phase. The test audience, to quote a brilliant corpse, is a collection of twenty-five "Random Yahoos" whose worthless brain-dead opinion about the footage is treated as gospel by the studio because everyone in the country thinks the exact same way.
I've got to say this doesn't sound like the worst adaptation, but just wait until filming starts.

I was disappointed in how the actual anime Death Note ended, but it was still a fantastic series overall.
I was upset at the end of the series, thinking "This can't be the end, I need more!" But the last few episodes were so suspenseful to me that I was satisfied after a few weeks of thinking the whole thing over. Honestly, right after watching the next-to-last episode I had a massive panic attack, that's how into the show I got.

If you think that is bad, wait until the second movie, I've seen it. It's terrible.
Do you mean of the Japanese movies? I never saw those.
Why would they make a second one?
If you liked the anime (Actually, if you like the idea of Death Note), I can recomend them. They're actually quite good.
The movies are brilliant IMHO, but I had no idea at all about the other Americanized one? WTF!!! They just can't do that!! Should be illegal!

There, there, Knight. You know you don't have to watch it, right?

Yes, I know they ruined it but it is America.

Okay, this does not seem bad. It may not be as good as Death Note (the original), but then again, I see absolutely no harm in changing it to make it appeal to a foreign audience. I'll still watch it, and most likely enjoy it. It just seems to me like (no offence) everyone here is complaining about it not conforming exactly the way they want to the original, and it seems like almost every post here (again, no offence) is from some elitist who can't abide change. Well, tough luck. It looks half decent to me and I look forward to it's production and release. If I watch it and it turns out to be this will most likely be down to bad acting or bad cinematography or something. But I'm willing to give it a chance. So everyone, stop hating because you think it's cool to hate this. Honestly, you're just as bad as Halo-bashers...

DO. NOT. WANT. Seriously, that looks awful. It makes me angry that they changed the plot SO much.

Don't worry about the script yet. It normally goes through several drafts, and different people, and then it is constantly edited throughout the production, by the director, while filming.

edit; after reading it; I dont see why the script is bad... why is it bad? It looks just fine?

and the worst part is all the idiots at my school will be going "OMG did you watch the new death note movie it was so awesome!" without even knowing that it was based on an anime/manga series of vastly superior quality
*sigh*
